My dog ate wood and paint. Should I worry? What symptoms to watch for?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 3 months and 7 days old | 80 lbs

My pup ate some wood and paint off my trim, should I be worried? What symptoms should I look for? Not sure if lead based paint but probably not because it was painted before I moved in 2 years ago

While modern paints do not contain lead, chewing wood can still cause intestinal injury and even result in foreign bodies. Signs of this would include lethargy, vomiting, loss of appetite, and/or diarrhea. You should do your best to reprimand Louie if you see him chewing the wall or furniture, and can even try some Bitter Apple spray to deter the chewing. I hope this helps and that all is well!
