Can dog constipation cause back leg dragging? My Dachshund has it.

This could have various reasons : your dog has severe arthritis of the hips, defecating (squatting and pressing) hurts, so she does not go. This in turn makes constipation and then when she wants to go it hurts so much she collapses or it presses on a vital nerve that enervates the rear legs. You will need to add fiberr to your dog's feed (canned pumpkin, not the pie filling0 and you will need to take him to your vet for an exam of his hips and possible prescription NSAIDs. Also go for regular walks with your dog, which helps loosen the feces.

Not being able to poop isn't a side effect of the medications Trixie is on, and I'm concerned that her not being able to poop is due to her back. Back problems are common in Dachshunds, and pressure on the nerves of the back can cause bowel problems. I'd take her into a vet immediately.

It is not uncommon in spinal cases to have altered toileting (constipation/difficulty urinating/poor control) - the nerves which control these functions also originate in the spine and can be equally affected, also squatting can be painful in itself. As long as he is able to toilet I would monitor closely over 24-48hours to ensure he is responding to the medication otherwise additional symptomatic treatment may also be required

It does sound like a back injury. If he is getting worse (meaning he started out stumbling and then was dragging his limbs then stopped urinating), the best solution for him is surgery. Make sure you talk to the vet about medications and the biggest importance is REST! This means in a cage only- no walking, carry outside to potty and carry back in. Once they have a disc issue, Dachshunds are more prone to future issues. I would recommend confinement again, and a quick vet checkup. Often pain medications and rest will help them heal. Veterinary acupuncture is also a great alternative therapy to increase speed of healing and hind end weakness or paralysis.

Hi and good morning! Thank you for your question. If he has gone 3 days or more with no bowel movement, then I'd bring him into your veterinarian to check him out. He could have a blockage or a neurological issue causing dysfunction of the nerves innervating his colon, a GI tumor or kidney dysfunction causing a dehydrated colon. Keep an eye on him and keep feeding a high fiber diet as you have been. Hope he passes stool soon!

Poor Chakita! She may have blocked anal glands and that's causing the strange walking and trouble defecating. I would recommend a vet visit for sure, but you can look under her tail and see if any area there in the region of the anal glands looks raw, red, swollen or painful. These glands can get blocked and then abscess and this is a very painful condition, and usually by the time it gets to this point the dog really needs to be on pain medication and antibiotics, and you won't be able to do much for her at home. You can always try to soak her rear end in a warm water-epsom salt bath several times daily to help alleviate anal gland swelling if this is the issue, but it'd be best for her to see a veterinarian to make sure there isn't something more serious going on like a rectal tumor or blockage.
