Why is my Beagle constipated, shaking, and not eating or drinking?

Poor Pira! It sounds like she has a loss of appetite, weakness, and lack of bowel movements. This can be caused by a number of conditions ranging from infections, masses, or neurological conditions. Pira should be seen by a vet as soon as possible. Usually with constipation they will try to go to the bathroom but nothing will come out - and they are straining (pushing hard). it doesn't sound like the issue to me. It is more likely that she got injured somehow while you were gone like jumping down off the couch or something similar. They will often do this and get a sore back. I suggest you get her to your vet for an exam - if she did injure her back the vet can give you some medication to help her feel better.

Dehydration can be a cause of constipation in dogs. Give Honey canned food and add water to it. Lack of exercise can be a problem, so I'd take her for a walk. Too little fiber in the diet is another cause, and you can add a tablespoon of canned pumpkin puree (no pumpkin pie filling) to her food. Other causes include a foreign body, blocked or abscessed anal sacs, or GI tumors. Having her checked out by a vet for a health check is a good idea. Best of luck.

A few tablespoons of plain canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) or a tablespoon of Psyllium powder (unflavored) can help move things along. However the other symptoms you mentioned do sound concerning to me. Decreased appetite along with drinking more water frequently and constipation may signal a kidney function issue, liver issue, or may be due the development of diabetes among other causes. My recommendation would be to have Pretty girl seen by her veterinarian as soon as possible for an exam and perhaps some blood work to check her organ function as there may be an underlying health issue here. Thanks for the question. If Ruby has been dehydrated, this will slow down the movement of food through her colon and lead to constipation. If it is constipation that is making her uncomfortable, there is usually a reason they are becoming constipation, but if you are not able to do any testing, this may be difficult to figure out. Adding a tablespoon or two of canned pumpkin to her diet can help constipation. Hopefully, that will help her be more comfortable. If she doesn't want to drink, sometimes offering ice cubes to eat can help increase their water intake, or putting a little low sodium chicken broth in the water. I hope Ruby is feeling better soon.

The first is constipation which I suspect you are hoping to remedy by adding the pumpkin to her diet. This can be helpful, but she needs to eat it. With constipation, the dog can become so uncomfortable that she will refuse to eat. The second common is scenario is actually diarrhea. The dog can strain to pass very small amounts of liquid stool. It is easy to miss and most people will assume they are not defecating at all. The treatment options are different for the two causes. Since she is refusing food, she is not feeling well. She will need to see her veterinarian. In the meantime, continue to give her water so that she does not become dehydrated. I hope this information helps!

This sounds very concerning and you should take her to a Pet ER tonight. She could have a severe infection or could have swallowed a toy and now has an intestinal obstruction. This is an emergency. The vet will need to take radiographs and if it is an obstruction Daisy will likely need surgery. Please take her to the PetER now.
