Puppy on TriFexis: Need oral tick prevention. What are my options?

It would depend on what type of preventative you were interested in, as an oral (nexgard, bravecto, or simparica), topical, or tick collar (seresto) would all be options for Moose. Hi there! I like the Seresto collar for this purpose - it lasts 6-8 months depending on your dog's lifestyle (how often he goes swimming, etc.), and is effective against fleas and ticks. There is no problem using it in combination with monthly Trifexis.

It is important to keep in mind that flea prevention works by having fleas make contact with the pets. If this is the first time you have found fleas, I would not jump to using a flea product yet. Once you switch to Trifexis, any fleas Buter comes in contact with will die faster because oral products work better than topicals. You will not need to use the flea collar. It is ok to give trifexis and simparica together (staggered by 2 weeks is great). Both of those medications will protect against fleas so there is some overlap with that. If you want to streamline how many medications you are giving Dakota monthly, Another option would be to use sentinel or interceptor instead of the trifexis and give with that with simparica monthly. These products contain the same heart worm preventative (milbemycin) as trifexis but do not contain any medication to kill adult fleas. (Trifexis contains both the milbemycin for heart worm prevention and Spinosad for fleas). That way you would be giving one medication for heart worm prevention (sentinel or interceptor ) and one for flea and tick prevention (simparica). Another option is to continue trifexis and add in a tick collar (such as the preventic collar or the seresto collar). I know there are so many products and options it is confusing ! Nexgard and Bravecto have oral chews that dogs can eat as treats. Nexgard is monthly whereas Bravecto is every 3 months. Both of these prevent against fleas and ticks. Heartgard is an oral medication that protects against heartworm and other intestinal parasites. There is a Seresto collar that can be worm by dogs to prevent flea and tick infections for up to 8 months. I recommend reaching out to your local vet to see which products they have available. You can use a Preventic collar, a Seresto collar, or a topical medication such as Frontline or K9 Advantix along with Comfortis for tick coverage. Or, if you prefer to stick with oral medications, you can switch from Comfortis to Nexgard or Bravecto - both of these cover both fleas and ticks, and are also very effective.

Most of veterinarians will avoid using two topical medications, in the hopes of avoiding interactions or side effects. Each product has different chemicals and if you use two topical products, you want to be sure they are safe together. Have you thought about using something like a Preventic collar? This collar works very well for ticks. You put it on Benji when you are going to areas that have ticks. When you are no longer worried about ticks, you store the collar in a baggie in a cool, dark place. It will remain effective for 6-8 months.
