Should I adopt a puppy who had coccidia but is now recovering?

Hi there. I would expect that all puppies in the litter likely have coccidia, so the pup would need to be seen by a veterinarian for treatment right away. Whether it will survive or not depends on how sick it is at the moment. Coccidia is usually fairly simple to treat, but it sounds like a severe case if two pups have already passed away.

Coccidia are fairly common in puppies, and usually a stool check is recommended to make sure the treatment is complete. If Loki is not having diarrhea hopefully the coccidia infection has cleared. At 7 weeks he may be due for a DAP vaccine (distemper/adenovirus/parvovirus combo) depending on when he received his last vaccines. I often discuss starting the Bordetella vaccine at this time as well. Generally other vaccines are started a little later.

If your dog is not having diarrhea, then I would consider her a subclinical carrier. I would recommend treating her, however, as she is young with an inadequate immune system. Additionally, she can spread it to other dogs via her feces. The treatment is quite easy; a 5 day course of Albon. The dogs usually like the taste of it, and it is once a day only.

Hi there! There's really no way to know exactly when she contracted it. The stress of moving to a new home often causes it to flare up, if it was already present in the puppy's system. It's very common to see coccidia in new puppies, just like other types of parasites, and does not imply that your breeder did anything wrong. This problem is usually quite easy to treat with medication from your vet, and shouldn't cause any long-term problems for your pup.

It seems your first sentence is missing a word in the middle, so I'm not sure what you'd specifically like to let your puppy do. However, it is fine to let Dak continue his normal activities, including socializing and laying around the house. The main precaution when you're treating him for Coccidia is to promptly clean up his stool outside - which is always recommended, but particularly important while a dog is being treated for intestinal parasites, to minimize the risk of contaminating the soil and reinfecting him or another animal. It is recommended to have your veterinarian recheck a fecal sample 2-3 weeks after treating to make sure Dak's coccidia have been cleared. Hope this helps!

Coccidia is transmitted via the fecal oral route so if there any surfaces that are contaminated with your pup's feces, this should be washed thoroughly and other dogs should be kept away from it. Coccidia can be treated fairly easy. I would suggest you keep your cat separated from the kitten until the kitten's stool is free of coccidia. If you adopt the kitten while under treatment for coccidia, keep your cat and the kitten separate and give them their own litter box.
