My dog had cluster seizures. Is this recovery or brain damage?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. For any seizure lasting longer than 5 minutes, I get very concerned about irreversible neurologic damage. During a seizure, the brain tends to overheat due to misfiring of neurons. This can lead to neurological abnormalities related to brain damage from the excessive heat produced by the seizure. If a seizure lasts for an hour I would most certainly expect irreversible neurologic damage to ensue. Hello, Seizures can cause brain damage, particularly if they last for more than a couple of minutes. Your vet can perform a thorough neurological examination if you are concerned about permanent brain damage from Bell's seizures. I hope this helps.

The trouble eating, disorientation and wobbly gait is likely a transient side effect from the phenobarbital given to control the seizures. This should subside after about two weeks until the body is used to the medication.

Oh poor baby. From the very little I know about her situation, I think she probably needs to be hospitalized full time and receive IV medications to try to stop the seizures or possible be put under anesthesia to allow her brain to heal a bit. It sounds like her prognosis is guarded at this point and she may not make it. There isn't anything you can do at home. Thank you for trying to take care of her and I hope she pulls through, but if she doesn't, then know you've done everything possible for her.

Aggression, altered behavior and disorientation are all common signs of seizure recovery. Not all seizures are epilepsy however and continued monitoring for future seizure events is recommended in order to determine any pattern and triggers, it is possible he may never again have another fit
