My dog has a cloudy spot in his eye. Does he need eye drops or a vet?

I suspect this a corneal ulcer but it is hard to be sure without full clinical examination. The right eye does not look as bad but there is also abnormal looking cornea. Please, take Rey to your local vets taking all the necessary precautions against Covid-19. She should be seen by a vet right away.

However, there are some other diseases that really need a very thorough evaluation of the eye to diagnose. I think that if he has not improved on the current therapy, it may be a good idea to check in with your veterinarian. If they are concerned based on their knowledge of his case, they could consider having you consult with a veterinary ophthalmologist. They would be able to perform a thorough evaluation and recommend accordingly. Good luck and have a great day!

It is hard to say exactly what the issue may be with Draco's eye without performing an ocular exam on him and running a few tests on the eye first, but I can offering a possibility. Spots on the cornea (clear part of the eye) itself can indicate a corneal ulcer or breaks in the cornea. These can be painful and uncomfortable. You may notice tearing or frequent discharge from the eye. Your veterinarian can diagnose a corneal ulcer with an ocular exam and a few tests. It is treatable with medication. Hi, I'm Dr. Johnson. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Poor Moxie! It's hard to tell 100% in the picture exactly what is going on. I wonder if Moxie is part Cocker Spaniel. Anytime I hear about a red eye I worry. The cloudiness could be edema in the cornea from increased pressure, inflammation or a corneal ulcer. Cocker Spaniels are at risk for glaucoma which is increased pressure with in the eye. Any new change in the eye I consider urgent. I recommend you see a Veterinarian now if painful. The Vet would stain the eye to look for a corneal scratch then check the intra-ocular pressure with an instrument to check for increased pressure (glaucoma) or low pressure (uveitis). Good luck!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I’m not surprised at the progression in Gracie’s eye- the cloudy spot is likely a clot from the blood. Based on location I’m guessing this was trauma (whacked her head playing or running, fighting with another dog, etc etc). However, it’s impossible to tell without an eye exam exactly which compartment of the eye that clot is in. My concern is that if it’s in the front chamber of the eye, it could signal uveitis- which in turn can hint at serious systemic disease (fungal infections, tick borne diseases, etc.). Long story short, I’d have the vet check it out to make sure it’s not something we should be more worried about. Best of luck to you and Gracie!

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The claudy eye is a sign of corneal wound or ulceration. It is usually caused by a scratch, foreign material, blunt trauma, or caustic substance irritation to the eye. You need to take Zeus to your local vets for an appointment as soon as possible. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, Zeus most likely will need a course of eye drops and anit-inflammatory medication. Untreated corneal ulcer can turn into a melting ulcer, which can cause loss of vision in that eye.

It's a little difficult to tell from the pictures which layer of the eye the opacity is in, but I will discus the most common reasons for an opacity in the outermost aspect of the eye (the cornea). The first possibility is that if Lily had an ulceration of her eye, that the area could have scarred in which will result in tissue that is more white. I would have expected that you would have noticed that here eye was red, or she was squinting or tearing if that were the case. The most common reason that a corneal opacity will appear without any injury to the eye is actually a benign fat or cholesterol deposit. We don't know why some dogs develop them, but they tend to develop them in the other eye over time as well. I would recommend having your veterinarian examine Lily to verify that is what they think is going on. If that is the case, then there isn't any reason for concern. If Lily's eye is red or if she is squinting or rubbing her eye, please have your vet examine her right away. I hope that was helpful and answered your question.
