My dog has clear, odorless discharge. Is it normal or serious?

Ejaculate containing sperm should look opaque white, so I don't think it sounds like sperm. It could be very dilute urine that appeared clear, or it may be saliva if he was licking his penis and prepuce. If he is urinating normally and seems to be acting like his usual self I would not be concerned. You should monitor for any wet areas on his bedding or other discharge from his penis and contact your veterinarian if you see these signs.

If it is the brown stuff I am seeing in the picture, it could be a small yeast infection (that is consistent with the smell you describe as well). Trim the hairs around the penis and then I would just try 25% white vinegar 75% water solution on a cloth and gently clean twice daily. If the discharge is white/creamy, yellow tinged, or even a bit crusty, that can be normal - especially for an in tact male dog. If there is problems urinating, blood in the urine or blood in the discharge, or very large amounts of the discharge, then I am more concerned. Unfortunately we are not legally allowed to recommend specific drugs/doses without a physical exam (also I have no idea what's available near you), so you'd have to call or visit the vet in that instance. It is normal for male dogs to have a small amount of discharge from the penis. Some dogs do a better job then others in cleaning themselves. It is usually a whitish to yellowish substance. If it is just being noticed occasionally I wouldn’t be concerned, however if it is enough that he is leaving puddles on the floor then he should be evaluated by a veterinarian. That is likely "smegma", a normal discharge in intact males. You can have your veterinarian exam him for confirmation. Monitor for excessive discharge or licking or for bloody discharge or difficulty urinating.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The elevated sodium likely has nothing to do with the discharge. The increased sodium while he was sick was likely due to dehydration. It is normal to have a small amount of discharge from the penis in male dogs. Excessive amounts that cause licking or urinary signs is NOT normal and can indicate a prepuce infection or a urinary tract infection. Use mild soap and water to wash the discharge away and see if you can retract the prepuce to see if there is a lot of discharge on his penis. If you see his penis coated in the the discharge that is too much and he should see your Vet. If you do not see any or very little he is likely fine. Good luck!

Yes, it's normal to see a small amount of yellow-green discharge at the tip of the penis in male dogs - this is called smegma, and is comprised of oils and secretions from inside the prepuce (the skin sheath that surrounds the penis). As long as Chester is acting normal, this shouldn't be any cause for concern. If he is licking this area excessively or having any trouble urinating, then I would recommend having it checked by your vet as these can be signs of an infection.

This can be completely normal. Nipsey may be getting up trying to get comfortable, and some smegma has come out as he's moving around. It doesn't sound like this is anything to worry about, and you don't need to do anything about it. I hope this helps.
