Why is my dog circling, lethargic, and eating grass? Should I worry?

My Labradoodle who is 9 y.o. is having a second episode of an odd movement where she turns left in a circle and her head stays looking left when she walks. She is also lethargic and not excited about her usual treat in the morning. We noticed she has been eating grass at least for a couple of days, but this unusual behavior started last evening. She was playing and energetic at the dog park day before yesterday. Also, this has happened once before and went away, thinking gone in 24 hours.

That is unusual behavior. I recommend to have Sandy examined by her veterinarian today. Also try to record the behavior before your visit so that the veterinarian can see it as well. The most common causes for a pet to exhibit this abnormal movement are inner ear infections, damage to ear drum or a foreign object stuck in the ear. Other potential causes that would be less common would be meningitis, an infection in the nervous system, a brain tumor, toxin ingestion or canine vestibular disease.
The doctor will perform a thorough physical exam. They will try to determine if there is any signs of neurologic involvement and check the ear canals very well. From there they may recommend further diagnostics depending upon the physical exam findings.

Unfortunately, her symptoms are very vague - they don't point to one specific illness or disease process. It sounds like her abdomen/stomach hurts. I suggest you take her to the vet for an exam. She is pacing from pain - I'm sure you don't want her to continue to be in pain. At her age I would be worried and it is best to catch this problem early.

If not, this may be indicative of an inner ear infection, or more seriously, a brain lesion. You should have Snickers evaluated at your earliest convenience to diagnose the cause of this behavior. Why is my senior dog circling, leaning, not eating, and confused?

The signs that you describe with Cleo really worry me about something going on in her brain, such as a tumor. I would highly encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. Take some videos of her behavior to show your veterinarian as well. My dog is lethargic and sad 2 weeks after deworming. What to do?

Hello, thank you for your question about Sandi. Lethargy is a nonspecific symptom, meaning that it could be a sign of many different underlying conditions. She could have a systemic infection or other condition. I think it is unlikely that her lethargy is related to the deworming tablets, since those were given 2 weeks ago and usually symptoms develop shortly after ingestion. I would recommend having Sandi seen by a veterinarian so that they can perform an examination and discuss the need for additional diagnostics. They may recommend performing bloodwork. Why does my dog eat grass, vomit, and have erratic eating habits?

Hello, this could be due to a number of issues, including her known heartworm disease if she is symptomatic and it's making her feel unwell. A few common reasons for a young otherwise healthy dog to have a waxing and waning appetite with no other symptoms would be a low grade chronic pancreatitis, mild IBD (inflammatory bowel disease), or a food sensitivity. If you haven't done a complete bloodwork panel with your vet, I suggest starting there. Your vet can discuss a feeding trial with prescription food - I would recommend trying an easily digestible food that's easy on the stomach such as I/D or EN (there are lots of acceptable brands of prescription food, these are just a few common ones), and if that doesn't help then do a trial of a limited ingredient or hydrolyzed diet for food sensitivity. My dog is dizzy, drooling, and her head is shaking. What's wrong?

Snow needs to see the veterinarian today. Dizziness is never normal and can indicate many things including toxin ingestion, drug exposure, an infection in the brain, brain cancer, low blood sugar, an inner ear infection and other serious reasons. A physical exam and bloodwork are needed to begin figuring out the cause and the best treatment. Other diagnostics may also be indicated. The lip smacking may indicate nausea which has many many causes and may be related to whatever is making her feel dizzy. A bump on her head could be many things. It could be an inflamed cyst but something like a cancerous Mast Cell Tumor can also behave the same way. Make sure to discuss all three of these things with your vet. I hope they figure things out quickly and that she gets back to normal quickly.

My dog acts strange, walks in circles, is aggressive. Should I worry?

Hi there. Yes, this definitely sounds concerning. Sudden behavior changes are often due to an underlying medication problem - Wanda may be in pain or not feeling well, or may have ingested something toxic that is causing neurologic symptoms. I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam right away. He/she can do blood work or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate treatment.
