Why is my dog lethargic, not eating, avoiding me, eating grass, and pacing?

I'm sorry Meatball isn't feeling well at all! It sounds like her stomach is quite upset and painful. The pain in her stomach could be indicated by her constant position changes, whining, and inability to stay in one position for long. These signs could be due to a severe GI illness, eating something rotten, a foreign body, or even cancer which unfortunately is always a possibility in a senior dogs. The excessively licking could be due to being nauseous, but it could be due to allergies which would cause the constant scratching as well. I would have Meatball seen by a vet immediately for a physical exam, blood tests, urinalysis, and x-rays to diagnose what is causing her symptoms so she can be treated.

It sounds like Ginny definitely has some GI distress going on if she is very lethargic, vomiting, and not eating. I would schedule a vet visit to have her examined if it continues, and if she seems in severe distress, has a very painful abdomen, or looks bloated, bring her in ASAP or to a local ER clinic. Various causes, such as general GI upset, obstructions, parasites, illness, pancreatitis, etc can all cause similar symptoms to this, so an exam to find the cause is best.

Hello, this could be due to a number of issues, including her known heartworm disease if she is symptomatic and it's making her feel unwell. A few common reasons for a young otherwise healthy dog to have a waxing and waning appetite with no other symptoms would be a low grade chronic pancreatitis, mild IBD (inflammatory bowel disease), or a food sensitivity. If you haven't done a complete bloodwork panel with your vet, I suggest starting there. Your vet can discuss a feeding trial with prescription food - I would recommend trying an easily digestible food that's easy on the stomach such as I/D or EN (there are lots of acceptable brands of prescription food, these are just a few common ones), and if that doesn't help then do a trial of a limited ingredient or hydrolyzed diet for food sensitivity. She may have ingested something that isn't agreeing with her GI tract. Monitor her and if the symptoms worsen, seek veterinary attention. If not, withhold food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet ( boiled boneless / skinless chicken and plain white rice) in small, frequent amounts. Serve warm or mix in a teaspoon or two of baby food to stimulate the appetite. If her appetite does not return or she begins to vomit, see your veterinarian.

Poor Lyl. There are so many things that can cause not eating and lethargy so it is hard to say for sure what is going on. I would make sure her gums are pink - if they are white, yellow or grayish blue then she is in critical condition and needs to go to the emergency clinic. Otherwise, you can try feeding her some plain boiled chicken (no bones) and white rice tonight and see if she will eat it. If not, then I would have your vet take a look at her. Your vet will be able to determine if she is in pain anywhere or if something else is going on. They will be able to do bloodwork and even X-rays if needed. That is unusual behavior. I recommend to have Sandy examined by her veterinarian today. Also try to record the behavior before your visit so that the veterinarian can see it as well. The most common causes for a pet to exhibit this abnormal movement are inner ear infections, damage to ear drum or a foreign object stuck in the ear. Other potential causes that would be less common would be meningitis, an infection in the nervous system, a brain tumor, toxin ingestion or canine vestibular disease. The doctor will perform a thorough physical exam. They will try to determine if there is any signs of neurologic involvement and check the ear canals very well. From there they may recommend further diagnostics depending upon the physical exam findings. I hope she gets back to her regular self quickly and please feel free to post any additional questions.

I'm very sorry that Summer is not acting herself. Unfortunately, her symptoms are very vague and don't point to any one illness or disease process. Pretty much anything can cause lethargy and not eating. I strongly recommend you have her examined by your vet to help figure out what is going on with her especially if it has been a few days already.
