Dog choked on treat, now blowing nose and struggling to bark. Is it stuck?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | unneutered | 8 years and 2 months old | 17 lbs

Hello, I gave my dog a treat last night. He sounded like he was choking on it but then the coast was clear. However, after that incident, he keeps blowing air out his nose and licking his nose as if trying to clear something from his nostrils. Also, when he tries to bark, he struggles a little bit but then is able to bark. i am concerned the treat may be stuck somewhere? his breathing seems fine. he slept all night and everything.

Yes, that information is a bit concerning. I would recommend having Chulo examined by a vet to see if some piece of the treat could be stuck in the nasal passage or back of the throat. It is also possible that there isn't anything there anymore, and that it just caused a lot of irritation.
