My dog has chin rash & discharge. Should I wait or go to ER?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bloodhound | Female | spayed | 9 years and 6 months old | 97 lbs

Hi. Our bloodhound Loosey was in emergency car for 6 days about a month ago with a liver infection. (Tested negative for lepto) she is now on denamarin to keep her liver levels regular and more frequent vet visits. This week I noticed this discharge and rash underneath her chin and I am just wondering if I should take her to emergency care or wait untill me scheduled visit in 3 days?

Hello. If she does not seem to be too bothered by the rash, Then you can wait three days for her re-check. I would pick up a skin antiseptic like Hibiclens & gently clean the skin twice a day. If Loosey seems really uncomfortable, rubbing & pawing at her skin, then it might be best to have her seen sooner before she does more damage to the skin. If she seems to be OK, I would also temporarily stop all medications, including the Denamarin, just in case this is a drug reaction. Missing 3 days of the Denamarin will not set her back terribly at all. This way, you can see if the skin begins to look better. Hopefully, she will continue to do very well in her recovery once this issue is sorted out. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
