Hello. If she does not seem to be too bothered by the rash, Then you can wait three days for her re-check. I would pick up a skin antiseptic like Hibiclens & gently clean the skin twice a day. If Loosey seems really uncomfortable, rubbing & pawing at her skin, then it might be best to have her seen sooner before she does more damage to the skin. If she seems to be OK, I would also temporarily stop all medications, including the Denamarin, just in case this is a drug reaction. Missing 3 days of the Denamarin will not set her back terribly at all. This way, you can see if the skin begins to look better. It contains zinc oxide, which can damage a dog's red blood cells – causing them to rupture, then leading to anemia, and even vomiting and diarrhea. It is not safe at all to use on dogs. The only way to know for sure what is going on is to have him seen by a vet. He also has to be seen by a vet to make sure he isn't suffering from anemia from your mom using the calamine lotion. Poor Raven. You did well by changing the bowls because it's believed that plastic bowls can cause an allergic reaction in some pets. Really the only way to treat this is with medication to flush the follicles and then treating the secondary bacterial infections. Topical creams or wipes that contain Benzoyl peroxide (Stridex pads) have been used with some success. And then you will need to visit your vet to get a short course of antibiotics prescribed. This is commonly seen when they get a skin infection (aka hot-spots). The chin and neck is a common place for this to happen, because moisture often builds-up and gets trapped under the fur. It appears to be rather involved, so you will want your vet to examine it at some point, but you can try a couple of things at home to keep it from getting worse. 1) Clip the hair with electric clippers around the area and expose all of the lesions if possible. 2) Wash the area with warm water and a medicated shampoo (can get this at the pet store) once a day. Use a cloth and gently wipe away the scabs. Do not scrub, because it will irritate the skin more. It's OK if all of the scabs do not come off in each washing. 3) Make sure the area is completely dry after washing. 4) Leave the collar off. You should start seeing good results within a week after starting this. It may take a few weeks before it's completely cleared. If two weeks go by and it's not getting any better, then it's best to have a veterinarian provide treatment. Also, if it appears to get worse, then take her to the vet for treatment.
