My dog and child have red spots after stray kittens. What to do?

This could also be some sort of infection perhaps. This requires further diagnostics which would be done based on an exam. Your veterinarian would be better able to proceed with the needed diagnostics to try to determine what may be wrong. I would highly recommend you have him reevaluated by his veterinarian since things have worsened again. They may be able to proceed with further diagnostics and treatments accordingly. Good luck!

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. You can consider a medicated shampoo you can get at your local pet store containing chlorhexidine which may help with a mild superficial infection. You may use this twice weekly. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Based on its appearance, that resembles a hot spot, or a moist-dermatitis brought about by licking. If it is at the base of the tail, this is a common place for cats to have a flea allergy/infection. I recommend having Baloo seen by a veterinarian who can perform a skin scrape test/cytology to see if there is evidence of secondary bacterial infection and/or other types of external parasites, such as fleas or mites. Baloo will need to wear an Elizabethan collar so that he does not continue to lick at this area and cause further trauma. He will also need to be on monthly topical flea and tick preventatives, purchased from your veterinarian. Flea and tick products that are available in food and pet stores are NOT effective OR safe for use on cats or dogs. I hope this is helpful!

You should definitely keep an eye on the area to make sure that it does not begin having discharge, increased redness, or crusting. Sight unseen, it is hard to say exactly what the cause of the spots are, but I can certainly offer a few possibilities. Red sores and spots can have many causes. Food allergies being one of them! It is possible she was allergic to the food she was eating. If you switched foods and she is now better with no sores or spots any longer, then perhaps a food allergy was the cause. However, there are other causes such as a flea allergy, other environmental allergy, fungal infection (ringworm), bacterial infection. The feline herpes virus causes on and off upper respiratory symptoms like sneezing, coughing, and ocular infections. Sores are not typically caused by the feline herpes virus. If the sores are not getting any better or appear to be getting worse, you may want to take your cat into a veterinarian so she can be properly diagnosed. If the sores looks very red and infected, your vet may prescribe an antibiotic. I hope this has helped and I wish you and your cat the very best!
