My chihuahua has a painful underarm rash. What can I give him?

You can apply a cold compress to the affected areas if she will let you. Hold it there for 5 minutes. You can do this 3-5 times per day. This will help alleviate some of the itch and discomfort. Unfortunately there are no over the counter medications we can recommend for a dog this small. Please try to get her to your vet tomorrow if at all possible.

Prevent him from licking the area by having him wear an elizabethan collar at all times. You can wash the area daily with soap and rinse well. Once it is dried, you can apply a dab of coconut oil and rub it in well. Make sure he does not lick this as it can cause GI upset. It is possible she has an overgrowth of bacteria or yeast or both on her skin. She may need special medicated shampoo such as Ketochlor or Malaseb or in some cases oral medication. Those spots on Bella could be several things including allergies, skin mites, flea bites, ringworm (which humans can get) or a bacterial infection. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing her diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. The best option is to have Bella examined since the rash is bothering her. This will figure out the cause the fastest and bring her relief sooner. If you cannot get to the veterinarian's office, you can wash the lesions with soap once a day and rinse well (don't wash her whole body, just those spots). Protect the areas from licking or scratching with an elizabethan collar. If they don't start looking better within about a week or if they get worse, have her examined by his veterinarian who may prescribe medications. I am sorry that Ali has a hotspot. I would recommend to give her 1/2 teaspoon of childrens liquid benadryl twice a day to help with the itching. You can use a small amount of hydrocortisone cream twice a day as well. The biggest key is to keep her from licking it so I would recommend to get an e-collar (the lampshade collar) for her to wear. Also, please know there is a good chance these remedies will not help her hot spot heal. If it isn't improving, I would strongly recommend contacting your vet for an exam and likely some oral antibiotics. I hope she starts to feel better soon!

I always find it useful to try to cover the area to help reduce the trauma to the skin when it is scratched. You may want to outfit Panda with a t-shirt that covers the armpits and then just cut out the front part or tie it a little bit so he doesn't pee on it. I would also try an over the counter oatmeal shampoo and wash him with that. If there is no improvement still in a couple of days, I'd bring him to see his veterinarian. He may need prescription strength topical medications to treat the skin, and even oral medications to help.
