What can I safely put on my Chiweenie's skin rash to help soothe it?

Hello, my name is Dr. Elizabeth and I am happy to help. Pets' can get rashes for many reasons. Some times you can care for it at home and sometimes they need to go to the veterinarian. For Boba you can try home care first. The first thing to try to figure out is how to protect the area from further scratching. It's a tricky because this portion of his neck won't be covered with the normal elizabethan collar. You would try a loosely fitting dough-nut style collar. Or the end of a tube sock cut to loosely fit around the area. A doggie turtle neck would work but it might be too hot where you live for that. Try to figure something out that covers it but not a choking/strangulation hazard. Next, wash the area once a day with either plain hand soap (like Dial) or a medicated pet shampoo. This will help to control the number of topical pathogens as well as remove oil and dead skin cells. Rinse the area well and gently towel dry. Lastly, apply a topical antibiotic twice a day. Just a dab will do and rub it in well. Make sure the skin is dry before application. Neosporin is fine to use. Keep him indoors, clean and dry. You can get hydrocortizone cream for pets and apply that once a day, try to apply with at least 2 hours after and before the neosporin. You can also give him benedrl every 8-12 hours. If the spot is not much better in 1 week, if it gets worse at any point or if the lesion is not completely healed within 2 weeks, Boba needs to be examined by the veterinarian. I don't think coconut oil and vinegar will be helpful. I suggest you use this medicated spray on the affected areas once per day. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). Poor Buddy! Rashes can occur due to many reasons that often include allergeries, mites or fleas. Definitely make sure Buddy cannot lick or scratch at the rash by having him wear an elizabethan collar at all times. A mild rash may respond to treatment at home. Wash the rash every day with hand soap and rinse it well. Once it’s dry, you can rub in a dab of coconut oil once daily. If the rash is more severe or if it’s not getting better after a few days, Buddy may need to see his veterinarian for medications. The cause of the rash needs to be diagnosed so he can be treated correctly. I do not recommend using a rash cream or anti-itch cream. Not only may it be the wrong treatment for the rash, but he will just lick it off and these creams contain ingredients not safe for a dog to ingest. I'd have him seen by a vet to have this diagnosed and treated. Tonight, put an Ecollar on him to keep him from licking. You can buy one at a pet store or make one at home. Those spots on Riley could be several things including allergies, skin mites, flea bites, ringworm (which humans can get) or a bacterial infection. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. You can wash the lesions with soap once a day and rinse well (don't wash his whole body, just those spots). Protect the areas from licking or scratching and he may need to wear and Elizabethan collar at all times. Since he is still licking the lesions, it's hard to know if the changes to the lesions are a sign of recovery or a worsening. You MUST stop the licking. If the lesions don't start looking better within about a week or if they get worse, have him examined again by the veterinarian who may prescribe additional medications.
