My dog chewed an empty rat poison container. Is he safe from residue?

It is very unlikely that a single mouse could ingest enough poison to cause toxicity for a dog Gibbs’ size regardless of the type of poison. If it’s possible that he has eaten multiple mice there could be more concern.

While this rat poison has a different mechanism of action that has been advertised as being less harmful to dogs, it has been reported to cause issues in dogs including anemia, gastrointestinal upset, among other symptoms. For that reason, I would recommend that you contact the ASPCA poison control center as they specialize in the more uncommon toxicities in dogs and will have more information on how to proceed from here. Otherwise, have him evaluated by a veterinarian so that they can contact the poison control center for you and proceed with the treatment recommendations. This is time sensitive and he should be evaluated as soon as possible. I am hoping for a full recovery!

As long as she didn't ingest any, there is little concern that she will have any toxic effects. You can flush her mouth with water to help ensure there is no residue. It's best to find out the type of poison. If you have the packaging, then there should be a number to call in case of poisoning. If you call the number on the package (1-877-854-2494) you should be able to talk to someone at the animal poison control who can help you determine what chance there is of any toxic effects and if anything needs to be done. I'd take Chubbs into a vet immediately for treatment to be safe. Depending on the type of poison, it can take days for signs of rat poisoning to appear in dogs. Bring the box of rat poison so the vet can treat him appropriately. Best of luck.

It can take between 1-7 days for signs of toxicity to occur, so you won't know if Bella is safe until about a week later. Keep an eye on her for signs of toxicity which include muscle tremors, hyper excitability, seizures, depression, hindlimb weakness, and ataxia. If you see any of those signs, rush her into a vet immediately. Best of luck.

As long as none was ingested, it will likely not cause any problems. If you would rather be on the safe side, you can bring shelbi in to see your vet and have her blood tested to make sure that there are no changes consistent with rat poison. I hope this helps! If she wasn't showing any signs of toxicity and started vitamin K right away, then most cases would do just fine. Also, it sounds like she didn't ingest enough to cause toxic effects if the company is correct. If you want to feel even more certain (in terms of amount ingested) you can call Animal Poison Control if you know the exact brand/concentration of the bait she ingested, then they can calculate the toxic dose needed to cause symptoms.
