My dog chewed a rag used to clean a jet ski. Is she okay?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This can actually be quite severe of a toxicity and while it is not for sure that Jessie was exposed to it, it is certainly possible. There are several signs that can develop secondary to this toxicity. Most concerning ones are signs secondary to neurologic effects and liver failure such as melena (black stools), severe vomiting, lethargy, seizures, difficulty breathing, pale gums and/or collapse. Given that she is already acting strange, she should be evaluated by a veterinarian to start checking for any of these possibilities. I hope that she is fine and she was not actually exposed. There are many possible causes for her symptoms, for example, she may be nauseous due to toxin ingestion or an upset tummy. She may be painful in her abdomen. Or, she may just be teething which can cause mild discomfort and drooling. If her symptoms do not improve in the next few hours, I would recommend getting her to the vet. They can perform a full physical exam to detect any areas of pain or discomfort, and check for fever and dehydration. If necessary, they may recommend blood work or x-rays to narrow down a cause. At minimum, they may be able to prescribe pain medications if pain is suspected. I hope this helps, and that Jessie feels better soon.

If Jazz is showing no symptoms by now, she will probably be fine. Symptoms to monitor for would be respiratory distress, red or inflamed skin, hair loss, itching, lethargy, excess salivation, excess thirst/urination or gastrointestinal upset (vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite). Seek veterinary attention if she develops any of these symptoms.

Clinical signs of poisoning are dependent on the toxin involved. Microcystins can result in liver damage or failure. Signs of liver injury include vomiting, diarrhea, blood in stool or black, tarry stool, weakness, pale mucous membranes, jaundice, seizures, disorientation, coma, and shock. Death generally follows within days as a result of liver failure. Blood work changes include elevated liver enzymes, a low blood sugar, a low protein, and even abnormal clotting. These are things that your veterinarian would be able to detect. Anatoxins result in neurotoxicity evidenced by excessive secretions (e.g., salivation, lacrimation, etc.), neurologic signs (including muscle tremors, muscle rigidity, paralysis, etc.), blue discoloration of the skin and mucous membranes, and difficulty breathing. Death typically follows within minutes to hours of exposure as a result of respiratory paralysis. If Mj is not showing any of the clinical signs above, I think her risk of being in liver failure is low. However, her pale/white gums are very concerning to me, as this could indicate anemia, or a low red blood cell count. This can make dogs dangerously hypoxemic, meaning they don't have enough oxygen in their blood stream to perfuse their tissues. I would contact your veterinarian to let them know that she is having these signs, so they can determine, based on her exam and bloodwork from her previous visit, if additional intervention is necessary. Oh no, that's not good! Gently rinse her mouth with cool water, and wash around her face with warm water and dawn dish soap. Avoid getting that in her eyes. Acetone can cause mouth irritation, so if you see excessive drooling or mouth pain (one sign of mouth pain is a decrease in appetite), take Daisy into a vet. Acetone can also cause irritation to the lungs if inhaled, and GI upset if any of the solution was swallowed. Monitor her for vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, trouble breathing, or lethargy. If you see any of those signs, take her into a vet right away. I hope this helps!

Certain toads (Marine Toad or Colorado River Toad) can be toxic if bitten of ingested. You should rinse Ash's mouth out with cool water for at least 15 minutes. Monitor for excessive drooling, redness or swelling in and around her mouth, increased heart rate or ataxia (wobbly gait). Frogs are less toxic than toads and may cause nothing more serious than some drooling and minor stomach upset.

Poor Jake! I assume Jake got the tissue after it had been through the full wash cycle, because if so most of the detergent should have rinsed out of it. If he didn't chew too much of the tissue I doubt he ingested that much of the chemicals. The chemicals tend to not be harmful in small quantities, so he should be fine. I would keep a close eye on him for the next 24 hours, he may develop a bit of an upset tummy. If he starts vomiting and can't stop or seems to getting dull I would visit the vet. Otherwise just keep an eye and give him plenty of water.
