My dog has chest pain and is sensitive to touch. What's wrong?

Poor Bella! It definitely sounds like Bella is uncomfortable. The hard knot does not necessarily indicate organ enlargement, but it can be a mass or tense muscles from the pain. Abdominal pain in dogs has many causes, including pancreatitis, intestinal torsion, and obstructions. Given her level of discomfort, Bella should be seen by a vet right away. Poor Belle! It sounds like she is experiencing some pain and she could have a problem with her back or possibly abdominal pain. In order to diagnose, she needs to be examined by a vet to localize the source if the pain. She may need an anti-inflammatory and pain medications to help treat the problem. You should restrict her activity until she is seen by a vet; no running, jumping, etc. Hope she feels better soon!

Based on your description I'm thinking Bella may have a hot spot (superficial skin infection) or either a yeast or bacterial skin infection. It likely would be uncomfortable when touched. Maybe posting a picture may make it more clear. But I think seeing your Veterinarian. If it is a hot spot or skin infection then they would like prescribe antibiotics, topical and maybe steroids. If there is a pinched nerve in the neck, it will radiate through the whole body and cause discomfort when picking up. I wouldn’t consider it “urgent” but it does sound like she may be in pain and need some medications to help relieve her pain. Poor Pipi!! I wonder if he may have injured his ribs or even injured his spine around his chest area. Poodles can have fine ribs, so if he fell he may have fractured one. Jumping on or off furniture or stairs can also strain the muscles that run along the spine (epaxial muscles) causing a very sore back. It is also important to check there are no injuries to his skin - an insect bite or sting may cause sudden pain. Given the severity of his crying, I would suggest you take him to the nearest emergency vet for an exam, so that they can identify the location and cause of his pain. Please do not give Pipi any human pain medicines, as many can be toxic to dogs even in small amounts. I hope he recovers very soon.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Blue! Common causes of pain when small dogs are picked up are: neck and back pain for forelimb pain. If this is new and he is also jumping up less, shivering or tremoring and not using the stairs I would take him in to the Vet this week for an exam as that indicates pain. Other reasons for crying when picked up is arthritis or being scared or surprised. So try to go slowly and gently if he is otherwise acting normal. Good luck!

I would contact your veterinarian to see if they can give you more assistance. I recommend making an appointment for her so they can find the source of her pain and get her the correct treatment. They may need to take x-rays to rule out a fracture. In the meantime, I would rest her in a kennel so she doesn't continue to injure herself. You could also try a warm compress on the area, but since it has been going on for so long, I would take her to a vet. Good luck and kisses to Molly!
