My small dog yelps when touched on shoulder. What can I do for pain?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 8 lbs

Molly has been yelping for about a week every time I touch her in her shoulder area,she seemed better yesterday but now she is yelping again,what can I give her for the pain ,she weighs about 7 to 8 lbs.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am sorry to hear Molly isn't feeling well. Unfortunately we are unable to give advice for medication without seeing Molly. I would contact your veterinarian to see if they can give you more assistance. I recommend making an appointment for her so they can find the source of her pain and get her the correct treatment. They may need to take x-rays to rule out a fracture. In the meantime, I would rest her in a kennel so she doesn't continue to injure herself. You could also try a warm compress on the area, but since it has been going on for so long, I would take her to a vet.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly neck or back pain. It could still be pain associated with a leg even if nothing seems wrong with them. I recommend that you have Piper evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include radiographs. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least they can prescribe pain control medications to make Piper feel better. In the meantime, reduce her activity as much as possible as that in itself can make a big difference. Why does my old dog yelp when touched, but seems fine later?

Poor Lily! If she yelps when she is touched in these areas, this is likely a sign that something is painful - even if she doesn't react when you examine her afterwards. She may have a pinched nerve, a herniated or "slipped" disc, or arthritis pain that could be causing her to do this. I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam when you are able to - he/she can do x-rays if needed to help determine the problem and can also prescribe pain medication for her to help make her more comfortable.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Lazy! She does sound very painful! She likely has hurt her back, hips or tail. The fact she cries out when you touch her there and when trying to get up indicates back end pain. Some dogs with anal gland issues or Lyme disease can show similar symptoms. I would have her seen today by your Vet before the weekend. They will very likely on physical exam be able to tell where she hurts. They can then prescribe the correct and safest medications for her condition. I hope this helps and I wish Lazy a speedy recovery!

My small dog yelps when picked up under front legs. Is she in pain?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lacey. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian. Small breed dogs are prone to neck and/or back pain. It can present as yelping. Her veterinarian will carefully examine her to determine if she is painful. If so, x-rays may be needed. In the meantime, keep her quiet and carry her as much as possible. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

If there is a pinched nerve in the neck, it will radiate through the whole body and cause discomfort when picking up. I wouldn’t consider it “urgent” but it does sound like she may be in pain and need some medications to help relieve her pain. My dog's shoulder hurts. What can I do to help her without a vet?

Since you have no easy access to a vet you can start by seriously restricting activity of your dog. That means strictly leash walking for eliminations, otherwise crate rest. Check for swelling and injuries. bite wounds and other trauma If you find wounds she will likely need antibiotics. If you do find a swelling you can try to ice the area on and off and hope the swelling will go down. Icing will also take the pain.If this does not improve within a week you need to contact the vet nearest you for advice. It may be possible for that vet to do a computer assisted consult (you will need a camera and a mic for that) and get medications to you.

Why does my dog yelp when I touch his head, even if he seems normal?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I’m sorry to hear Chester isn’t feeling well. It sounds like he could be in pain in his neck or maybe his ears. I recommend taking him to his vet to locate the area where he reacts to pain so they can get him some medications to relieve it. Please do not give any over the counter medications as they aren’t safe for dogs and could effect the treatment the doctor prescribes. In the meantime, I would let Chester relax (no running, jumping, or playing) so he doesn’t cause more pain. Good luck and kisses to Chester!
