My stray cat is sick. Could his illness be contagious to my dogs?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | 6 months and 16 days old | 5 lbs

I found a stray cat on my porch today. He was very friendly and jumped in my arms. I think it's a he. Any way he has green discharge coming out of his nose, he's constantly sneezing and has pretty bad diarrhea. His one eye seems funny too. I did get him to eat some soft food and drink a little water. I am taking him to the vet tomorrow but I'm concerned about my pets in the house. I have three dogs. Do you have any guesses as to what he might have and if it could be contagious to my dogs?

How lovely of you to look after Hiccup! It could be possible that he has a respiratory infection. These can be caused by viruses and bacteria. While the viruses are not contagious, it is possible a bacterial infection could be to your dogs. I would keep Hiccup isolated from the dogs to be safe.
