How to keep my dog calm in crate during leg injury recovery?

There is not necessarily a magic trick to make them stay in the crate without complaining about it. What I find helpful is to reward them for being in the crate. I like to give them a long lasting chew or treat (such as peanut butter) right when you get her inside (not when she complains). Nymeria needs to stay in her crate as much as possible and should not be allowed to walk fast. Five days is not long enough for a broken bone to heal and she needs complete rest for a couple of weeks in order for her bone to heal correctly. If you allow her too much activity, this will prevent the bone from healing, and she could end up needing surgery to fix it. Best of luck!

I'm sorry for Brody's injury. It sounds like he had ruptured his cranial cruciate ligament. Surgery is the ideal treatment but when that is not possible, crate rest is strongly recommended. Every time Brody steps on that leg he is injuring it further. If he tries to run and jump or play on it he will injure it even more. So 4-8 weeks of cage rest is better than a lifetime of chronic pain and lameness. There are things you can do to try to make it easier on him. Toys or chews that may interest him but that he can't swallow large pieces of. Make sure he can be out with you on a leash when possible instead of a cage. If he is super anxious or fighting the crate you may need to discuss anxiety or sedation medications with your vet. Here's an article that explains CCL injury a little bit more. Poor Kawaii! Some dogs do unfortunately become stressed in the crate and struggle to get out, which can make things worse. I would recommend asking your veterinarian about getting a tranquilizer for him that you can use as needed, to help keep him calm for the next few weeks until he has recovered. This will help to keep him calm in the crate so that his back can heal.

The first thing to do is have Lola checked by the veterinarian for pain. It's possible she still has pain, it waking her up, then she's distressed. If a medical cause is ruled out, start feeding Lola in her crate and leave treats in there for her to "find". This will create a positive association and should help re-adjust her to the crate. With a broken bone, Biko should not be walking around at all. You need to keep him in a kennel to allow the leg the best chance to heal. He should also be in a splint, not a supportive wrap. He may need sedatives. I recommend to call the veterinarian and tell them what is happening. They can provide a splint as well as sedation for Biko. This means no running, jumping, or playing, and the dog should be taken out to toilet on a lead only.
