My dog has a broken leg but won't rest. Will it heal properly?

Hello. Poor Biko. I am sure he does not need surgery. A supporting wrap is all that is necessary & lots of rest to give the bone a chance to heal. He is so young that this will heal very quickly. Nymeria needs to stay in her crate as much as possible and should not be allowed to walk fast. Five days is not long enough for a broken bone to heal and she needs complete rest for a couple of weeks in order for her bone to heal correctly. If you allow her too much activity, this will prevent the bone from healing, and she could end up needing surgery to fix it. Best of luck!

The bone appears broken to me but without an x-ray it is impossible for me to know for sure. Your vet should sedate him, try to put the bone back in alignment as best he can and then put on a spoon splint (from the elbow down to the toes) to stabilize the bone. The dog should be kept as quiet as possible for 6-12 weeks to ensure that the bone sets and heals properly. This means no running, jumping, or playing, and the dog should be taken out to toilet on a lead only. Once x-rays are done to confirm that the bone has fully healed, the dog will be allowed to exercise and activity levels must be built back up slowly. Physical therapy and hydrotherapy may be done to help the dog regain it's muscle mass and activity levels.

In the picture is not great but that looks swollen. While sprains can swell, swelling is more common with broken bones. Both conditions are painful. I recommend to have Oreo see her veterinarian today who will likely need an x-ray to check for a broken bone. Just like with humans, some broken bones can heal with a cast but others need surgery. Poor Otto! In general puppies heal very well. The only thing to watch for is that a splint can cause temporary laxity in the joint ligaments but this typically resolves. It is very important to keep up with the splint to care as described by your veterinarian. Hopefully his healing will be uneventful. Please feel free to post any additional questions.

That really depends on how the fracture heals. If the splint/bandage falls off then you could take him to an orthopedic surgeon who could pin or plate the fracture internally so he wouldnt need an external splint/bandage.
