My dog has little bumps on her head. Are they warts? What to do?

According to the picture this looks like a wart that Lady scratched and now has a scab on it. Since she is bothering with it and seems uncomfortable I would take her to see your veterinarian. They can make sure it is nothing else like a scratch that got infected or a different type of growth that go infected and scabbed over. They also will be able to give her a topical ointment to place on the area to help with any type of infection. If this is something that continues to bother her or scab over I would recommend removing it so it does not continually get infected and bother her. If she is scratching at it I would put an e-collar on her so she does not make it worse. As dogs age it is very common for them to get more warts like these, some may bother them while others will not.

From the pictures that you have provided the skin masses that you have noticed look very similar to a benign skin tumor known as a sebaceous adenoma. I call these old dog warts when using layman's terms. These are typically benign tumors of the skin which occur with older aged animals. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I do recommend that all new bumps or lumps be evaluated by a veterinarian to determine if they are benign (non-cancerous) or not. There are multiple non-concerning growths of the skin (such as adenomas or warts) that do not need to be addressed, but there are certain types of skin cancer (such as mast cell tumors) that would need to be removed in order to be cured. I would recommend having Ebony evaluated by her regular veterinarian to determine if these bumps are concerning or not, and if any treatment is needed. Good luck!

These may be the result of a bacterial skin infection, mange, or be growths. I recommend having Bonita seen by a vet if these bumps do not resolve on their own in the next few days. You can also try using antibacterial wipes for dogs, which are available in most pet stores on the area to keep it clean. I hope this helps and that all is well with Bonita!

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach! From the pictures you provided, I would suspect these to be what we call sebaceous adenomas. These are benign masses of the skin / glands of the skin that typically occur in older animals. We sometimes call these "old dog warts" and they are nothing to be concerned about. Unless they are bleeding, bothering the dog or infected, we just monitor them for any changes and remove them if any of the above occur. If Tess is due for a dental cleaning, you can always have these removed at the same time if needed. Otherwise, you can just monitor these for now. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Dogs can develop different types of skin growths/masses. This mass could be an adenoma or benign wart like skin growth, a true papilloma wart, or another type of growth. Your veterinarian might be able to tell what the mass is just by looking at it and/or feeling it, or might recommend taking a sample of cells using a needle and examining it under the microscope. If the mass is bleeding I'd recommend seeing your veterinarian sooner rather than later.
