My dog has strange lumps and blackheads on his skin. What are they?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Judging from the pictures I suspect what you are seeing are blackheads. I would recommend using a shampoo called Dermabenz to help remove these. You can find this shampoo online quite easily and bathe twice weekly until resooved. If the condition does not improve or it worsens then I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Dogs can get blackheads and clogged pores just like humans. Picking and squeezing them often lead to increased inflammation and can lead to infection so I recommend to leave them alone. There is not one easy solution to get rid of pore issues. You do want to improve skin health and this can be done by feeding a diet aimed at skin health and adding additional omega-3 fatty acids for dogs to the diet. The two diets I recommend for skin health are Royal Canin and Nutro. You are not likely to find an over-the-counter shampoo that can flush the pores but your veterinarian likely carries one like Peroxiderm. Lastly, your veterinarian will also carry medicated wipes that you can use on the area that are safe if Rhino happens to look at them, although you should prevent Rhino from licking these areas in general. It sounds like your dog has a skin infection. Usually infections are characterized by small red pustules full of pus. But sometimes they can look like whiteheads or blackheads, also known as comedones. Your dog will likely need a medicated shampoo to help flush out his hair follicles that have become clogged and often times need antibiotics to help the infection cleared up. There is a chance as well that this may not be an infection but maybe small cysts that are present. If this is the case usually no treatment is needed. These can be caused by a bacteria infection of the hair follicles (bacterial folliculitis), autoimmune diseases, a bacterial skin infection ([pyoderma](https://www.petcoach.co/article/staphylococcal-pyoderma-a-common-skin-infection-in-dogs-pup/)), a fungal skin infection among others. I would recommend taking Sadie to the vet to determine the cause of the pustules, and to prescribe the proper treatment. In the meantime, do not squeeze them or try to pop them, as you could potentially spread infection. An [e-collar](https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/well-and-good-e-collar) (cone) can be used to prevent lickign or chewing until she sees the doctor.
