My dog has a bump on his penis near the urethra. Is Neosporin safe?

You can cleanse it with a mild soap (i.e. Dove) and warm water and then apply a very thin layer of Neosporin to it twice a day. Monitor it to see if it resolves on its own within the next 3-7 days. If it bothers Chico at any point, then it is best to get it seen by your veterinarian for further testing. However if this is just an inflammatory response then it should resolve on its own within a week. If not, then it may need to be aspirated or biopsied to determine what it is and how we need to go about treating it. I hope everything works out ok for Chico.

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Did you mean to have a picture attached to your question? If so, unfortunately there was not one attached. Puppies often get “pimples/pustules. This is usually a skin infection called puppy pyoderma. However, other problems such as a bug bite are possible as well. A Small amount of neosporin is unlikely to cause any harm at this time. Most mild Cases of pyoderma will resolve on their own or with a medicated shampo. However more significant cases need antibiotic therapy. I would recommend that you monitor the area close for any change or other pustules to appear. I would recommend getting it checked out by the vet within the next 24 hours, who can prescribe the appropriate antibiotics to treat the infection. They can also examine more closely to see if there is an underlying cause, such as a foreign body in the prepuce that is causing irritation. Sometimes it does require antibiotics to take care of it. You can bathe him with a medicated shampoo containing chlorhexidine which you may get at your local pet store. You can bathe him twice weekly for 2 weeks. If it does not improve, have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck!

Hello, and thank you for your question. This looks like a bacterial infection of the skin. Around the penis is a common area to get skin infections due to the proximity to the ground. I would suggest bathing the area with a gentle aloe and oatmeal type shampoo. If Duke's skin does not improve within 1-2 days, I would bring him to the vet, as he may need something stronger such as oral antibiotics. Unfortunately it is hard to tell when we cannot see exactly where on the penis this purple spot is. If it is a round swollen area, then that would be the bulbus which swells during copulation and locks the penis in the vagina of the female. If people separate the two dogs rather than wait until they part themselves, this bulbus can get injured and the female can also get injured. It is not a good idea to let this male mate with the three females in heat as he will introduce bacteria into their vagina and possibly uterus and so could cause a uterine infection (pyometra). If you could take some good photos of your dog's penis, we could better assess the situation and give you a more specific answer.
