My dog has a raw, painful penis bump after grooming. What to do?

Hello, and thank you for your question. This looks like a bacterial infection of the skin. Around the penis is a common area to get skin infections due to the proximity to the ground. I would suggest bathing the area with a gentle aloe and oatmeal type shampoo. If Duke's skin does not improve within 1-2 days, I would bring him to the vet, as he may need something stronger such as oral antibiotics. In the meantime, you may need to put an e-collar (cone) on his head to prevent him from licking and further traumatizing the skin. I hope this helps, and that Duke feels better soon!

Yes, I would recommend having him examine by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. It is hard to say for sure from the blurry photo but it appears as though the tip of the penis is stuck out of the prepuce. It looks as though Oliver has paraphimosis (inability to completely retract the penis into the prepuce) and this can be caused by a number of things. I see the area you are referring to on Oliver. Unfortunately it is difficult to tell what is going on by the picture alone. This may be an area of inflammation or infection on Oliver. If he is licking the area more than normal, I would be worried that he may develop an infection if it's not infected already. I would recommend taking him in to your vet to have him checked out. He may need an antibiotic and/or anti-inflammatory to resolve the issue.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Yoshi. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian soon. The skin over the penis is called the prepuce. It appears swollen and possibly infected. His veterinarian will need to evaluate his actual penis to see if it appears healthy or not. In the meantime, place an E-collar on him to prevent any further licking as this will only make it worse. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I would suggest applying Zymox topical ointment or malacetic conditioning spray to the area to help relieve any irritation and prevent infection. If the area begins to ooze or become swollen / more red, I would have a veterinarian examine the area to see if oral antibiotic therapy is needed. If Ches has been licking or chewing the area, I would purchase a plastic cone to place around his neck so that he cannot access the irritated area as this will make things worse. I hope this helps! You can cleanse it with a mild soap (i.e. Dove) and warm water and then apply a very thin layer of Neosporin to it twice a day. Monitor it to see if it resolves on its own within the next 3-7 days. If it bothers Chico at any point, then it is best to get it seen by your veterinarian for further testing. However if this is just an inflammatory response then it should resolve on its own within a week. If not, then it may need to be aspirated or biopsied to determine what it is and how we need to go about treating it. I hope everything works out ok for Chico.
