My dog has a bump near his eye that keeps appearing and disappearing.

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 5 years and 1 month old | 90 lbs

I've only owned our dog for a few years, and he has this bump by his eye that keeps popping up. We don't touch it or irritate it. He is a fixed male pitbull that was adopted from a kill shelter. He is also fiveish. We were gonna take him to the vet, but when we decided we should the bump was gone. It has come back a few times now, then goes away. Can you please give us an idea of what this is and how sure you think it is is? Thanks for your time.

It's hard to see from the picture, but it may be something that C is getting into causing the irritation. Allergies to food or the environment can sometimes cause irritation and bumps on the body, sometimes around the eyes. If the bumps come and go, making a note of any potential triggers such as a certain type of treat given before they appear, or playing at a particular park/location happens prior may help you pinpoint if an allergy is the case.

Parasites, infections from bacteria, fungus and yeast can also cause irritation and redness, and a skin scraping from your vet may help narrow that down as a possible cause. Even if the bumps aren't actively there, having the area examined by your vet may turn up some answers behind why it is happening.

It is possible your dog has a cyst under the skin that is rupturing or draining internally, which is why it seems to disappear and then reappear. I would continue to monitor the area, measure it when it appears and write down the measurement so you can watch to see if it is increasing in size. A visit to your vet when it shows up would be recommended so they can palpate it and possibly aspirate (use a needle to remove fluid or cells) the area to be certain that is what is going on, as it is impossible for us to truly diagnose a condition without seeing the dog in person.

It could be allergic reaction - it often starts at the eye(s) and face in dogs. You should apply a cold compress on the eye for a few minutes. Repeat that for 3-4 times. The swelling should slowly go down and dissapear in 8-10 hrs but if it is getting worse, or he wants to scratch the eye, please take Bleu to your local vets.

I would have it examined by a vet in person so that it can be looked at more closely and treated as needed, especially since it's by the eye, bothersome, and been there a while. In addition, placing an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Midnight is a good idea as this will stop her from being able to paw at it and may reduce the irritation to it some.

My dog has a pimple-like bump near his eye. What should I do?

Thanks for sending the picture of Marty's eye. It's possible that this lesion is a cyst, a benign or malignant mass, inflammation from localized skin issues (e.g. mange, ringworm, infection, etc.), or even something as simple as an insect bite. The only definitive way to determine the cause of this type of lesion is with some diagnostic testing. The good news is that it doesn't look significantly irritated now or the cause of any major concern. You can try using a warm compress over this lesion twice a day for a few days to see if it gets smaller or resolves altogether. However, if the lesion grows more, opens up with any discharge, or seems to cause Marty to be itchy, then it should be checked out by your vet. I hope that everything goes well!

My dog's eye bump burst, but it's still irritated. Should I see a vet?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Bumps on eye-lids can be cysts, but they can also be other masses like tumors. For this reason getting it checked is recommended. In the mean-time, I would check for squinting, moving away from your hand when you go to pet him on that side of the face, redness/blueness/whiteness of the eye-ball itself that is different from the other eye, or scratching/pawing at the eye. If any of these are occuring, then I would take Marley to a vet. If he isn't too concerned about it, and isn't squinting or moving away from you, and is only minimally pawing at it, then I would recommend getting an E-collar (you can pick one up from any emergency clinic without an appointment as it is now late in Australia), to prevent ongoing trauma to the eye which can get much much worse with scratching. I would then get Marley to your vet in the morning. Best of luck with Marley.

My dog has a red lumpy spot over his eye. What is it? How to help?

Hello. That looks like a small growth/tumor that originated in a tear-producing gland. Without an actual biopsy, we cannot say the exact type or if it is benign/malignant. However, the majority are Meibomian Gland Adenomas and typically are benign. They can bleed, cause inflammation or infection and, if large enough, can irritate or even scratch the cornea. My dog has a red bump under her eyelid that popped. What's wrong?

I am afraid that this red mass looks like a tumor or multicystic mass. This is definitely something that needs to be seen by a vet as it a) keeps your dog from closing his eye lid which can damage the eye to the point of losing vision (will dry out the cornea), and b), tumors can grow invasively, ie destroy the eye. Your vet will examine the mass, possibly take a little bit of tissue to examine under the microscope or send in to a pathology lab and then, depending on the findings, discuss treatment options, which could include removal of the mass alone (if possible), medication to remove it or make it shrink, or even removal of the eye. Please make an appointment with your veterinarian soon.

What's causing my dog's flaky skin, eye irritation, and bump?

Those spots on Basil could be several things including allergies, skin parasites, endocrine disease or a bacterial infection. He looks very irritated and I recommend to have him examined by the veterinarian for appropriate testing and treatment. That bump could be related to the underlying cause of the skin issues but an ingrown hair or even skin tumor is possible (time will tell). At home, you can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. Protect the areas from scratching by having him wear an elizabethan collar if needed.
