My dog has a pimple-like bump near his eye. What should I do?

Lesions like this can be a few things including a skin tumor, an ingrown hair, an infection or a blocked pore. You may monitor this lesion for the next week. Protect the area from scratching or rubbing with an elizabethan collar if needed and you may apply a warm (not hot) compress twice a day for 5 minutes. Check the lesion every day. If the lesion does not start improving within a week or if it is getting worse, have him examined by the veterinarian. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. This will likely require sedation because of the location of the growth. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. The area in the picture looks like an area of what I would call excoriation or skin irritation usually seen when a dog scratches an area extensively due to itching. The yellowish area can be a pimple or what we call a pustule (a pimple containing pus). Pimples and pustules are usually raised lesions, extending up from the skin. It's a little difficult making out much detail in the picture. Sometimes damaged areas of skin turn yellowish like that and are usually flat in appearance, not raised up like a pimple/pustule. It's hard to see from the picture, but it may be something that C is getting into causing the irritation. Allergies to food or the environment can sometimes cause irritation and bumps on the body, sometimes around the eyes. If the bumps come and go, making a note of any potential triggers such as a certain type of treat given before they appear, or playing at a particular park/location happens prior may help you pinpoint if an allergy is the case. Parasites, infections from bacteria, fungus and yeast can also cause irritation and redness, and a skin scraping from your vet may help narrow that down as a possible cause. Even if the bumps aren't actively there, having the area examined by your vet may turn up some answers behind why it is happening.

There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point. I'm glad to hear that by and large Roxy isn't bothered by this bump. It's possible that this bump could be due to a benign mass (histiocytomas are fairly common in young dogs), a malignant mass (although this would be far less likely given Roxy's young age), an abscess, granuloma, or other infectious issue. Regardless, it would be best to take Roxy to her vet for an exam to have this lesion checked out. Your vet will likely recommend some diagnostic testing to help determine the cause of this lesion. Most likely, they'll recommend a fine needle aspirate, which uses a needle to draw out a few cells for microscopic evaluation. Based on those findings, they'll be able to determine the best course of action, whether that may be surgical removal, medications, or just monitoring it for changes. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Bumps on eye-lids can be cysts, but they can also be other masses like tumors. For this reason getting it checked is recommended. In the mean-time, I would check for squinting, moving away from your hand when you go to pet him on that side of the face, redness/blueness/whiteness of the eye-ball itself that is different from the other eye, or scratching/pawing at the eye. If any of these are occuring, then I would take Marley to a vet. If he isn't too concerned about it, and isn't squinting or moving away from you, and is only minimally pawing at it, then I would recommend getting an E-collar (you can pick one up from any emergency clinic without an appointment as it is now late in Australia), to prevent ongoing trauma to the eye which can get much much worse with scratching. I would then get Marley to your vet in the morning. Best of luck with Marley.
