My pug's eyes are red, cloudy, and have raised bumps. What's wrong?

These could be a signs of a corneal ulceration. I would recommend an immediate check up as Pugs are particularly predisposed to a type of ulcer called ''melting ulcer'', which is a particularly nasty type and could deteriorate very rapidly. Pugs, as you know, are prone to develop several eye problems such as corneal ulcers and chronic inflammation of the cornea (so the cornea can become blackish on the surface due to chronic rubbing against either skin folds or cilia). I can see that there is a chronic irritation from the pics but cannot rule out the presence of corneal ulcers. This can be done by a physical examination at your local veterinarian and would be essential to give appropriate treatment. I would definitively recommend a check up to establish the presence of corneal ulcers first and then decide what treatment is needed.

This is not normal, the cloudiness is due to swelling and the dark color is likely pigmentation, the eyes response to ongoing irritation and scarring. Please have her assessed to determine the underlying cause such as ulcers, dry eye or inturned eyelids. Urgent treatment is required to relieve pain and restore sight

The initial bump/growth may be a meibomian gland adenoma, or a chalazion, which are benign growths that often need to be removed surgically due to the irritation it causes to the eye. I suspect the recent blinking and tearing are due to an eye infection, possibly caused by irritation from the bump. This definitely warrants a visit to the vet as soon as possible, as I worry about any damage to the cornea which can worsen the problem quickly, especially if he is scratching at it. In the meantime, you can try applying a warm wet compress to the eye for 5-10 minutes at a time. I would also put an e-collar (cone) on his head to prevent scratching of the eye. This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. It is very close to the eye and there is a risk that Milly may injure the eye while trying to rub or scratch it once it gets bigger. Therefore, I would suggest to get her checked by your local vets. Milly will likely be prescribed an antiseptic skin ointment / cream and the bump will hopefully go away in the next few days.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Pepples. The pictures you submitted are very helpful. It appears as though her conjuctiva (the tissue under her eyelids) is very red and swollen. She also appears to have cloudiness to her cornea (the surface or her eye) and tiny vessels growing across it. She will need to see her veterinarian to determine the cause of these changes. She could be suffering from a corneal ulcer (scratch to the surface of the eye). There is also a condition that is common in her breed that causes decreased tear production. Once she has a diagnosis, treatment can be started and she will begin to feel better. Good luck!
