My dog's tail tip is broken. How long until a dog's broken tail heals?

It can take a long time for a wound on the end of the tail to heal, and sometimes wounds in this area never heal right due to trauma and lack of blood supply. I would recommend rechecking with your vet - sometimes amputating the tip of the tail is necessary to get a wound to heal.

Broken tails do happen and dogs can live normal lives without their tail. I wouldn't worry about this as long as the tail is healthy now. Definitely have it checked out by your vet after you get it just to make everything is ok, but I wouldn't be worried about an amputated tail as long as it doesn't look infected, gangrenous (which is doesn't from the photos), and it can still use the stub. It can be normal for the hair to fall out at the tip of the tail where it was injured. The hair may not grow back in that area at all. As long as the wound is healing you do not need to worry about the hair loss. If the wound is open, bleeding or oozing then I would be concerned. If you dog is not bothering the tail injury I would leave it unwrapped. If it is not oozing or bleeding there is I need to keep it wrapped up. Hope this helps!

If it is broken, yes the vet can treat it. It will also be painful to her, and the vet can prescribe pain medication. Please do not give her any human pain medications as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I'd take her into a vet now. I hope this helps!

Unfortunately, only an x-ray or a bone sticking out of the skin will tell you if it is broken. Tail injuries can be very serious, even if there is not a broken bone. Since they are very far away from the body, there is less blood flow that creates a condition for poor healing. I would strongly recommend seeing a vet. Depending on the amount of skin that is damaged, the vet may recommend amputation of the damaged part of the tail to help with healing. If you choose to treat at home, you need to try to clip the hair away from the wound so it can stay clean. You will need to prevent all licking, since this will delay healing and spread bacteria. You should clean it 2-3 times per day with water and a mild chlorhixidine wound soap. You can apply neosporin after cleaning the wound. Do not use alcohol or peroxide.

Hi, yes it is necessary to see a vet. Jazzy will likely need antibiotics as it looks like the wound is oozing a bit of fluid in the picture. These lesions can be tricky to heal, and the more you keep on top of it, the better outcome you will have. If Jazzy is biting the tail, please use a cone shaped collar in order to refrain her from doing so. Hope Jazzy gets better soon.!

Ouch! Without seeing the x-rays, it's difficult to provide a terribly accurate opinion regarding Luna's tail. In general, if there is a small fracture near the tip of the tail, these can heal quite well without any lasting problems. However, if there is a fracture closer to the tail base, these can cause more problems when healing (i.e. holding the tail up while using the litter box) and be more painful. Tail amputations do not cause any significant stress beyond the stress caused by any surgical procedure. Most cats recover uneventfully after 10-14 days with the help of some pain medication. To my knowledge, there is not emotional distress caused by tail amputations because cats do not experience the social pressures that people will feel. In most cases of tail fractures, I lean towards amputation. I hope this helps you to confirm your decision!
