My dog's tail tip injury: hair loss & hates wrap. What should I do?

In this cases, we usually put a tight bandage made of a vet-wrap on the tail, that goes from the tip up to the base of the tail and we change it daily. It is difficulty to say without seeing it; however in general hair loss on the tail can be caused by ringworm, alopecia X, Cushing's disease, or even allergies. For further info on what the cause could be, you could opt to do some skin testing (i.e. impression, biopsy) +/- bloodwork to look for underlying causes. It can take a long time for a wound on the end of the tail to heal, and sometimes wounds in this area never heal right due to trauma and lack of blood supply. I would recommend rechecking with your vet - sometimes amputating the tip of the tail is necessary to get a wound to heal.

The skin will probably not grow back and the tail will probably go through a process of necrosis, which may put his life in danger. i strongly recommend taking him to the vet, the tip of the tail will probably need to be amputated.

Poor Pixie! If the wound is small, she may be able to heal it on her own. Check to make sure there’s no evidence of any gaping or deep tears. Otherwise make sure to keep the area clean and dry. You must make sure she does not lick the area or cause further trauma. An Elizabethan collar worn at all times will prevent licking.Check it every day for redness swelling or discharge as this would indicate infection. Typical wound healing is 10 to 14 days. Often tip of the tail injuries actually don't heal and we end up amputating the injured bit. If it's going to heal, it will take 4-8 weeks. Definitely stay in close conversation with your vet about what you're seeing at home and take Oscar in for a recheck as recommended (probably in every 1-2 weeks until it's healed or it's decided that it's not healing and needs surgery). You can try applying Neosporin and giving it time. Unfortunately, tip of the tail injuries like this can be very difficult to heal since there is not much tissue or a very good blood supply to the very tip of a cat's tail. Sometimes they are licking it to clean even when you don't see, which will significantly slow healing. If it doesn't appear to be healing in a few days, then your kitty should get checked out by a vet. Sometimes we need to amputate the tip of the tail so that we can close healthy tissue over the bone to aid with healing.
