My dog broke a nail. Will it grow back if the vet has to cut it off?

If the nail was torn, it is a good idea to try and trim it back if there are loose edges above the quick to prevent further snagging. If it was completely pulled out, it can grow back, however it is best to monitor for signs of infection as nailbeds can easily become infected. This can include pain, swelling of the paw, limping, chewing/licking at the paw, oozing of debris and discoloration. If you see any signs of pain or infection it is best to bring her to the vet ASAP for treatment.

Declaws often get caught easily and injuries to decllaws are common so it is recommended they be removed to prevent this from happening. You can take him to your veterinary office and ask them to cut the nail back to promote normal growth, or you can monitor the toe and see if the nail grows out naturally. Just watch for any signs of infection (redness, swelling, discharge) in the toe. Do not allow your dog to lick or chew at it. An e-collar (cone) can be placed on him until he has healed.

Usually once the nail falls off they are much more comfortable. Make sure to keep the nail bed clean by soaking in a small tub of warm water and Epsom salts a few times a day. Within several days it will harden and with in a few weeks you should notice the nail starting to regrow. The nail is almost completely broken, it's barely hanging there, you should be able to easily cut it off with a nail clippers, i'm pretty sure it is not going to be painful and won't be bleeding either.

It depends wich part of the digital is affected, if it's the nail then it needs to be removed, if it is the bone then the options are either to leave it as it is and giving your dog pain killer or having the all digit removed surgically.
