My dog is limping on hind leg. X-rays show fracture. What now?

Unfortunately it is difficult to say for sure what the main problem is without seeing Mona myself. This certainly could be a fractured bone from an injury or this could be a soft tissue injury. If you are unable to get to the veterinarian right away, I would recommend resting Mona and giving her Well & Good Buffered Aspirin from Petco and see how she does. If the lameness does not resolve or it worsens, I would recommend having her seen by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Without examining her, it is difficult to know whether she potentially has a fracture or a soft tissue injury. If she seems very painful on the hind leg, I recommend having her evaluated by a veterinarian. He/she can perform a physical exam to best localize the pain. Your veterinarian may also recommend x-rays to look for evidence of a fracture, which may require surgical fixation. If no fracture is found, Hazel may have sustained a soft tissue injury, and will require strict rest and anti-inflammatories. In the mean time, please restrict her activity to cage-rest only and leash walks only to prevent worsening of any injuries. I hope this is helpful!

If they are not concerned about a broken bone, it may be a good idea to give Ben some time to rest up to see if this is just a soft tissue injury of some sort. I would give him a few days to a week on the medications and complete rest limiting his activity to see if he improves on his own. Hi there and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Oh dear! I'm sorry this happened. Yes, it is possible there is a fracture. Ligament or tendon injury could also have occurred as well. I would recommend Dougie see his veterinarian as soon as possible for an exam and potential x-rays of the leg if Dougie's vet suspects a fracture. I hope this helps and best to you and Dougie!

I’m not sure there’s much more you can know about the underlying cause of Prancer’s lameness without a radiograph to see the bone. Certainly all the things you mentioned would not help to heal any injury either. The first concern I have is related to the hard area on her hip for some type of mass or cancer. Hopefully it’s not that and it’s unrelated. The fall could have injured the hip/joint and certainly being dropped didn’t help that. She could also have ruptured her cruciate ligament. The fact that she is still lame after two months makes me worried about an injury to the bones or a ligament injury. A trip to the vet for a thorough palpation may give the answer and a radiograph (x-ray) may be needed to look at the bones. At home you are doing the right thing by resting her. Do not allow her jump, go for walks or even use stairs. She needs to be rested. If a fracture is present somewhere however, it needs to be completely immobile and may take 8 weeks to heal (although non union fractures can’t heal properly). There’s not much you can give her to heal bone injuries but omega 3 fatty acid supplements and adding in a joint supplement such as Dasuquin can help to naturally decrease any inflammation. Since the lameness seems to be reoccurring, I would recommend you bring her into a veterinarian for an examination. Young dogs can often experience many conditions that can cause lameness. These can range from conditions such as panosteitis (growing pains) to congenital conditions such as elbow dysplasia, or OCD lesion of either the shoulder or elbow. Certainly a soft tissue injury (muscle strain or sprain) may also be the culprit. Regardless, it may be nice to see if the veterinarian can determine her "pain point" and localize where her lameness is coming from. They will also be able to give you prescription medications that ma help to ease her discomfort. I hope this information helps, good luck and I hope Luna gets some relief soon! :-)
