My toy poodle has a broken jaw and won't eat. Does he need an IV?

You could monitor for the next hour but if he continues to cry, he seems not as active as usual or if he is painful when you touch his jaw or you notice any other change I would suggest to bring him to the vet to make sure is all ok! I would call your veterinarian in the morning and let them know he is not eating or drinking. This could be from an upset stomach from the pain medication. I would talk to them about getting a different medication and schedule the surgery as soon as they can. I would also crate him or keep him confined as much as possible so he doesn't injury himself even further. As long as he is behaving normally, you can offer 1/4 of his meal and a 1/4 cup of water. Soak the food first to soften it in case his teeth and mouth are still sensitive. Poor Peppie! It depends on where the fracture is, and whether it is displaced. I have had good luck with fractures of the mandibular symphasis (the very front of the bottom jaw) by having the dog wear a loose-fitting soft muzzle for ~6 weeks and feeding exclusively soft food. The muzzle would be loose enough for Peppie to lap water and soft food, but tight enough that he couldn't totally open his jaw and it would help stabilize. He would wear this 24 hours a day, including while eating and sleeping. Your vet will likely be familiar with this so I recommend calling and asking if this might help. It would only be beneficial for specific types of jaw fractures so it's important for your vet to give the go-ahead first, since they know the specifics of Peppie's fracture but I've had good success using this technique. Poor Oswald! If he is shaking from the pain and not able to eat then you could take him to an emergency clinic for an exam and treatment. He could have a bad tooth that is causing him a lot of pain and may need medications to help relieve the pain. Pain medication would make him a lot more comfortable overnight until his regular appointment tomorrow. You could also call your vet and give him/her an update and see if he/she would just prescribe a pain medication for tonight. Hope he feels better soon!
