Why hasn't my 2-year-old female pug had a heat cycle in 7 months?

Dogs go into heat around every six months, but it's not set in stone. Give Naughty some more time, but if she hasn't gone into heat in another few weeks, have her seen by a vet. As an aside, I would make this her last litter. Dogs who are around six and older should never be bred. I would have her spayed after she weans this litter. Best of luck.

You are correct that Panda could start going into heat suddenly, as female dogs can start their first heat any time after six months. If you don't bland on mating Panda, I would get her spayed as soon as possible.

Most pets have a menstrual cycle once every 4.5-8 months on average, and some breeds only have 1 cycle per year, like the Basenji. So it is normal if she is not on a routine once every 6 month rotation. Since she is a mixed breed, she may have the genetics for having a once yearly cycle. She doesn't appear to be bloated or possibly pregnant, so she likely will skip this period. This is unusual in dogs. Typically smaller breeds have 2 to 3 heat cycles a year. I am assuming this is a new change in the frequency for her and that you are seeing vaginal discharge or bleeding. If so, it is possible these are not normal heats and that she has disease in her reproductive tract. I would recommend a visit to your family vet for an exam. Additional testing to evaluate her reproductive tract may be recommended such as vaginal cytology and abdominal ultrasound.
