Dog breast cancer: Clear fluid from tumor. Does it mean euthanasia?

Poor Felony! If this lump is leaking pus, then it might be an abscess and not a tumor, as pus is a sign of infection. I think it's worth having Felony and this lump checked out by a vet. Should it be an abscess, then it can be treated with antibiotics. If it does turn out to be a tumor, then I would definitely assess her quality of life. I work for a home euthanasia service, so I face these questions all the time with my clients. I always recommend making a list of five things your dogs loves to do, and when they no longer do at least two of them, their quality of life has declined to the point where euthanasia should be considered. My professional opinion is to have Felony seen by a vet to see if the lump is an abscess. An abscess doesn't mean she has to be put down, and you could have more time with her, so it's definitely worth checking out. I hope this helps!

Based on the picture it looks like Marley has a small cyst. Cyst will fill out with clear fluid but can also have different color fluid. Cyst are typically non cancerous and nothing to be concerned about. However you should never decide what a mass is based only on looks. Some cancerous masses can look like anything for example mast cells tumors. I would recommend taking Marley to a vet for an aspirate of the mass. The vet can look at the cells under a microscope and tell you what the cause it and if it should be surgically removed. hope that helps

I am so sorry, but there is nothing you can do at home for this, other than try to keep it clean if it breaks open and bleeds (which it looks like it could do at any time). Short of taking her in, there really just aren’t any options... this would require surgical removal. If she’s comfortable, eating, and happy, it’s not wrong to just love on her for the time she has left and not pursue treating the tumor. Again, I’m sorry I don’t have more options to offer you. I suspect your veterinarian is correct. When masses get to the point that they begin to ooze or break open, they need to be removed, even if they are not cancerous. Masses can outgrow their blood supply and this can be a reason to see that oozing. Masses can also get infected and this could cause that oozing. I recommend to play it safe and have Brian examined by his veterinarian today to make sure antibiotics are not needed. Make sure to protect the masses from itching, scratching or rubbing. Unfortunately, even in person I would be hard pressed to give you a diagnosis based only on appearance. When a client comes in with a pet that has an unknown mass, we typically consider the following as possibilities, taking many factors into account: a mass/tumor, an abscess, a cystic structure, an insect bite, an allergic reaction, or a bruise from trauma. If the structure has burst open, it is most likely not allergic or from an insect. Depending upon your dog's age, the time the lump has existed, the consistency of the fluid you have noted, and the presence / absence of any other clinical signs, one of the other options is most likely. Something the vet might be able to do is obtain some cellular material from the affected area, place it under a microscope, and see if there is any cellular material that is useful in obtaining a diagnosis. Other times, appearance alone can at least tell a vet whether or not there is an active infection. As far as the possibility of cancer, tumors are certainly able to open up as you have described. They are typically more common in elderly dogs, though even this is largely dependent on the type of tumor. I would schedule a visit with your vet sometime soon. I would also in the meantime prevent Pancakes from bothering with the area. You can either buy an e-collar from a store / vet, or try and make something homemade until a commercial one can be obtained (with it being Easter, finding a store open that has one may prove difficult). The purpose of this is to prevent any current infection from worsening, or absent infection from beginning. Hope this makes sense.

Unfortunately, this is a difficult situation because most tumors that are cancerous and rupture are not going to heal on their own. A double mastectomy will be a very large and could be difficult recovery time for an 11 year old dog. Also, please know that even with surgery, you may not get another 3 years out of her simply because she is already at the top end of her life span. Also, there is always the risk that the cancer has already spread. Another option you may want to talk to your vet about is whether they can just do a palliative "debulking" of the mass that has ruptured. If there is a way to just resect the one tumor that has ruptured, this potentially could give her a good quality of life without doing a full double mastectomy. With the tumor being ruptured, I am afraid you are being forced to either do a debulking surgery, full mastectomy, or euthanasia. Leaving it alone isn't a good option because it won't likely heal on its own and if it isn't already, it will become infected.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Thanks for the pictures! I see these commonly around the ears and neck. They tend to be benign cysts. They are clear because there is fluid in them. You can have the cyst drained but they tend to fill back up. You can discuss removing it with your Vet, if the cyst is smaller than 8 mm maybe they can remove it with lidocaine. I hope this helps and I wish Toby the best!
