My dog has no dewclaws. Are dogs born without them or removed?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Male | 5 months and 25 days old

I was trimming my new dogs nails and he is an australian shepherd. I was just wondering why is it that some dogs are not even born with front dewclaws?, i was just curious as he does not have any dewclaws on the front or back. Is it just a breeds genetics i guess?

Tidus might have had them removed after he was born. Breeders will sometimes remove a newborn's dewclaws a few days after being born, around 2-5 days of age. Dewclaws are occasionally found on the hindlimbs.
