My dog's poop has undigested food and is blue. Is this normal?

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | spayed | 4 years and 9 months old | 17 lbs

If there are no food particles visible when the stool of excreted but some particles are visible once the stool is broken open what does that mean? Are the food particles that are visible undigested food are is she getting the nutrients out of them? Also is it normal for 1/4 of the stool to be the color of blueberries? (Which I fed her) thanks! I'm just considered about malabsorption if I'm constantly seeing food matter in her stool.

I believe you posted yesterday about this same issue, and I explained yesterday that not all the veggies you feed Chloe will be digested. Yes she is getting nutrients out of it, but the food will be too fibrous for the dog to fully digest. As an example, humans can't fully digest corn, which is why you see corn in the feces. You get the nutrients from it, but you can't fully digest the corn itself. If you are feeding her blueberries, then yes I would expect to have that affect the color of her feces. She is not a ruminant (which are herbivores) so she cannot fully digest veggies and fruits like they can. Biologically, she does not have the organs (ruminants have a four chambered stomach to digest plants fully) or the microorganisms to assist in that digestion. If Chloe was having problems with malabsorption, she would be experiencing pale runny feces and weight loss amount other symptoms. There is not need to worry about this at all :-)

    Dogs aren't herbivores, they are carnivores and as such, they can't fully digest all vegetables. Just like humans, for example, can't digest certain vegetables totally such as corn. Giving her a product with a higher count of enzymes and probiotics will not change that, it's simply how she is made biologically. It is normal and not something to worry about :-)

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I think it is a coincident that a part of her stool looked like a kibble. I cannot imagine that a whole kibble went through her gastrointestinal tract without being digested. Please, keep an eye on her stools and if you see more of potentially undigested food, Chloe may need a blood test to check her pancreas function.

It's good that her stool is better this morning, and I would continue to monitor it. Orange and blueberries can be hard for a dog to digest, and that's probably why you are still seeing it in her stool. Given you are seeing improvement in the stool, continue to monitor it for the next 24-48 hours. If it isn't normal after that time period, then I would have her seen by a vet.

Shades of stool color can vary widely from day to day, hour to hour, or (as you experienced) within the same bowel movement. Typically, diet and supplements are the main sources of changes in stool color, so the supplement that you're using may be to blame. The color of the supplement or food are less to blame for the color change than the way some of the vitamins and minerals digest. Regardless, since Chispas is still eating and acting normally, there's no cause for concern. Shades of brown in stool are all normal. However, colors like black, red, or white stool are all signs that something is amiss. Based on what you've described, I don't think you need to be concerned in the slightest!

Why is my dog's stool the same after switching to digestive food?
Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You may need to feed the i/d stew for a few days in a row to appreciate a difference in stool. But Chloe's stool may look the same on both diets. The stool is normal in each picture, so I'm not sure what the goal with her stool is. I hope this helps!

Why is my dog's poop orange? Should I be worried about the color?
Hi and thanks for your post! The orangish color of Chloe's loose feces may be caused by what she ate recently. I see a part of a corn cob (?) which could explain the yellow-orange color. It is likely caused by something she ate recently and I wouldn't worry too much unless she starts to have diarrhea, vomiting or decreased appetite or if you notice the feces are still orange-yellow present after a few days. Why is my inactive dog pooping more on her new high-protein food?
That stool looks normal to me. There are a lot of factors that may be causing Chloe to poop more on the new food including the fiber content of the new diet. If she is otherwise acting normally you don't have to switch Chloe's food because defecating more frequently is not an issue as long as the stool is well formed. Because you state that Chloe is not very active you may want to consider a lower calorie food to prevent weight gain. An all canned food diet can also help to prevent weight gain.
