My dog has bloody stool after food change. Should I wait or see a vet?

If he is otherwise acting normal and doesn't have any unexplained bruising on his body or red blotches on his gums, then this is likely stress colitis. You can try offering some probiotics, if available, to him in the meantime until the storm calms down. It is also likely that the storm itself is causing Melo to stress out. Some good readily available probiotics are Fortiflora or Proviable and mostly found at your local pet store. If they are also not open, then you can just try a bland diet of boiled plain chicken or ground turkey and rice for now, then get Melo seen by your vet as soon as the weather clears up to get his colitis treated with prescription antibiotics. You can add a canine probiotic to the diet that can help restore nirnak bacteria. You can feed boiled chicken and rice and yogurt also. A sample should be checked for parasites as he may need to be dewormed. Sometimes this can be caused by an infection, diet changes or stress from a new home and routine. If vomiting starts it he stops eating he needs to be seen immediately

They should ask many detailed questions and help you decide if Jennex should come in for an exam today or if you can try a bland diet +/- probiotics and see if it passes after 24 hours. In normal times, Jennex would go to the vet but with COVID-19, some protocols are changing. Blood in the stool significant significant inflammation or sometimes a more severe cause of GI upset. The blood could be due to many conditions including eating something he shouldn’t have, bacterial over growth, parasites or even organ disease. If the vet wants to see Jennex, the doctor will check him for parasites and bacterial over growth so bring in a stool sample. A bland diet can help. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. A good probiotic is Purina FortiFlora if you can find it. Kali may have a viral infection, intestinal parasites, or even a bacterial infection. These conditions can be diagnosed and treated by a veterinarian. I recommend bringing a stool sample from Kali in a disposable container to your appointment to make the diagnostic process quicker - your vet will be able to check this stool sample for intestinal parasites. These signs could be compatible with a colitis, which is an inflammation of the last part of the colon, usually related to dietary indiscretion. As a first approach, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Raegan! Having diarrhea secondary to eating a different brand of food is common. I don't think it has to do with the brand but more with Raegan being more sensitive to abrupt food changed than other dogs. The blood commonly occurs with severe diarrhea, it indicated inflammation in the colon. When blood appears in the stool I think it is best to have the pet seen and antibiotics started (metronidazole). Other causes of diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, toxin ingestion and the obvious food intolerance. I feel it is best to have her seen before the weekend but if you can't get her in then I recommend fasting her for 12-24 hours to rest the GI tract then restart feeding with a bland diet. Boil chicken or hamburger and mix with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs and feed the diet until 2 normal stools then slowly transition her back to her dry food.
