My dog has a bloody runny nose from one nostril. Any home remedies?

A black lab I take care of has had a runny nose out of one nostril for about 2 weeks now. The mucus was cloudy and yellow and is now gooey and bloody (for about a week now). I have talked to the owner twice about it who does not want to take the dog to the vet due to limited funds. Are there any home remedies I can use for this doggie?

That sounds very concerning for Blackjack. I doubt there's much you are going to be able to do at home to help him. Bloody nasal discharge is very concerning for a cancer, fungal infection or object lodged within the nose. A bacterial is possible but it doesn't generally get this bad and it usually effects both sides.
Putting him in a steamy bathroom a couple times a day may help to loose things up in the nose and help it to drain better. An Omega 3 fatty acid can help improve the quality of the skin (make sure to get one for dogs). Keep the draining area very clean and always use something soft like a cotton ball to try to avoid the surrounding skin from getting infected.
This pup should see the vet. There are two credit programs that clients commonly use to get funding. One is called Scratch and the other is called Care Credit. My dog's one nostril is bleeding with mucus for 3 weeks. What's wrong?

When it is one nostril then it narrows the causes down to a few possibilities. It is very possible that there could be an object up in the nasal cavity causing these signs. The other concern would be a nasal tumor. Nasal tumors can be hard to diagnose without a CT scan. I will usually do an anesthetized nasal flush to see if it helps. If not then I will usually refer to a specialist for a possible CT. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon.

Oh no, poor Jack! I'm glad to hear the bleeding stopped with the ice pack. You can try to gently use a warm wet washcloth to wipe away as much external discharge as possible. If Jack is a pretty tolerant dog, you can also try using a cotton swab with warm water to gently clean just inside of his nostrils. I hope that all goes well for Jack!

Hi. It sounds like Mayor has an upper respiratory infection. These can be caused by viruses, bacterial, or fungal infections. There isn't anything unfortunately from home that would cure it or treat it. That would have to come from your veterinarian. This evening you can close a small bathroom door, turn on shower as hot as possible, get the room very steamy/humid, and place him in that bathroom with the steam for 10 min 2-3 times a day. This isn't treating the infection, but helps break up mucous to make him more comfortable. Good luck.

My dog's nose keeps bleeding for a long time. What should I do?

Oh no. Poor Brandy. She likely has a bleeding disorder or some kind of trauma to her nose. You should definitely take her in to your vet to have her blood tested for a coagulation disorder. She may need special medicaiton to allow her blood to clot properly. At the very least the vet can replenish her fluid loss and get her on Vitamin K to promote coagulation and help stop her bleeding. Nose bleeds can occur as a result of trauma, significant rhinitis or inflammation of the nose, high blood pressure, rat poison ingestion, a problem with blood clotting, and/or a possible cancerous cause. How to treat it depends on what the underlying cause is. Koeby should be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible to determine what the underlying cause is. Dogs can lose a significant amount of blood from their noses and become anemic. There is no at home treatment that is sufficient. I hope this is helpful!

My dog's nose is raw and bleeding. How do I treat it at home?

Your dog may have rubbed it raw, under the couch or through the fence maybe? I suggest washing the area gently with antibacterial soap and water. Apply a warm washcloth 2-3 times a day for five minutes at a time to help keep it clean and draining. After washing and the compress, dry thoroughly and apply a dab of antibiotic ointment that **does NOT** contain hydrocortisone to the wound. Steroids will slow healing. An OTC triple antibiotic ointment will suffice. Rub it in well and don't leave any excess for your pet to lick off. If it does not show signs of healing or if your dog develops a fever, loses his appetite, starts vomiting or has diarrhea have him seen by your veterinarian right away. Potential cause may include allergies, infection, automimmune disease or even cancer. An e-collar (cone) may be used to prevent rubbing or pawing.
