My 1-year-old pug has bloody rashes all over her body. What's wrong?

I am sorry to hear about your pug. Photos of the areas you are describing may help give us more information. A thorough examination would be recommended including a skin scrape to check for mange mites, a fungal culture to check for ringworm, and cytology to check for bacteria or yeast overgrowth. There are many different possible causes for skin problems that you describe, and many can be treated with a variety of medications but we need to do testing to determine the cause.

Poor Whiskey! Constant itching is uncomfortable! Constant itching could be several things including allergies to fleas, allergies to something in the environment, food allergy or endocrine disease. Each one of these problems is detected and addressed differently and I recommend to discuss with your veterinarian which one to start hunting down first. Parasites are often ruled out with an oral medication like Simparica. Food allergy is best ruled out with a diet trial using a hydrolyzed protein. Endocrine diseases are detected with blood work. Environmental allergies are a little more difficult to detect but a response to therapy or a blood test can give an indication. Once you figure out and address the underlying cause, the itching should not come back. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing her diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). This is probably caused by an allergic reaction. first of all make sure you de-flea Chinna regularly every month with a high quality spot on (ex. Advantage) as fleas are by far the most common reason for these reactions. If the fleas are not the problem, it could be an allergic reaction to food or an environmental factor. this is more complicated to treat and will sometimes require medications such as Steroids, anti histamines or cyclosporin in order to stop the allergy.

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can eventually be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching. It is not an emergency but it may possibly get worse during the next 24-48hours, especially if he keeps scratching. Charlotte has hives all over her and is likely experiencing an allergic reaction. Likely the vomiting and diarrhea are all part of the reaction. Sometimes we never know the cause, but insect or spider bites are common. The mainstay of treatment are antihistamines and steroids. Likely she should be put on metronidazole for her diarrhea as well. I would call your Vet back and ask to have her seen today. She will be miserable until Thursday and may have more vomiting or diarrhea. I hope this helps and I wish Charlotte a speedy recovery!

Poor Amy! This could be many different issues ranging from pain, neuromuscular issues, or even a toxin. Amy should be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible to try to get to the bottom of this issue. If she is very lethargic, has decreased appetite, any vomiting, diarrhea, or change in water intake, then going to a veterinary emergency clinic would be appropriate. Best of luck to her!
