My Morkie has chronic bloody, mucousy diarrhea after spay. What to do?

Diarrhea can be the result of an intestinal infection, dietary indiscretion (eating something that upset her gastrointestinal tract), inflammation or even stress. Bloody urine is typically due to a bladder infection, bladder stones, a primary bleeding disorder or in rare cancers bladder cancer. She will need to see her veterinarian for urine and fecal testing as she will likely require medication to treat her issues. I hope this information helps!

The tests that are pending also may be helpful so we will just have to patiently wait for those results. I would be sure she has been dewormed even if the stool tests were negative, have a B12, folate, TLI and PLI blood test done, have her tested for Addison's disease, try her on a prescription hydrolyzed diet like Royal Canin HP or Purina HA and then I would consider taking her to surgery or getting endoscopic biospies of her stomach and intestines to rule out IBD, lympangectasia and lymphoma. Tylosin and a probiotic is worth a try too. I think there are many other things to do before euthanasia. I hope this helps and I wish Kai the best of luck!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Remi. In the bloodwork that was run, did it include GI specific testing such as cobalamin, folate, PLI and TLI levels. These are values that will give information such as the location of GI disease (small intestine vs pancreas) and treatment options. I typically do this planel in conjunction with an abdominal ultrasound. This information with the ultrasound can give insight into conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, food sensitivities or as you mentioned cancer. The anti-inflammatory properties of the antibiotic she was on could help even with a tumor in GI tract, but there are so many other causes of diarrhea that would respond as well. I think it is worth pursuing further bloodwork and the ultrasound. If you can get a diagnosis, then a treatment plan can be developed. I hope this information helps!

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Rocky! The red color is from blood. Blood in the stool indicates inflammation in the colon. The stool in the picture is diarrhea. Possible causes of bloody diarrhea after being spayed are: Effects of anesthesia and stress, from pain medications she received or is still on (Rimadyl, deramax, meloxicam....). Other causes: virla infection, food sensitivity, ate something gross outside, and toxin ingestion. I would call your Vet and tell them she is having bloody diarrhea and they will likely prescribe some medications to help. They may also tell you to stop any pain medications they sent home with her after the spay. You can start feeding her a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger mixed with rice. Feed about 1 cup per 10lbs per day until 1-2 normal stools. If she starts vomiting or doesn't want to eat or is lethargic she may need to be seen by your Vet. Good luck!

With a normal stool sample and blood panel, the next steps are experimenting with diet - specifically a hypoallergenic prescription diet (such as Royal Canin Ultamino, which is definitely the most expensive option, but also the one that seems to work best in diagnosing food allergies. It takes eating ONLY the prescription food for about a month to see if it helps, and then if it does help you can certainly experiment with less expensive foods. If you she would having signs of food allergy you'd need to do a full 3 months, but for intestinal issues, you should see a response in just a couple weeks) OR a high fiber/easily digestible diet (such as Hills Fiber Response EN). Some dogs need continual probiotics to keep normal stool. Treating any underlying anxiety (if present) can also help. Finally, a gut biopsy, which is much more invasive and costly can be done. Since she isn't yet spayed, I would consider doing a gut biopsy when/if she is spayed because that would be minimal additional expense or trauma for her while she's already have an abdominal surgery. Hello. This is just not normal. I can not imagine telling any client that waiting for something to take a month to pass is in any way normal. You really need a second opinion on this. Mac needs a fecal analysis, & not just one done in a vet's office. It needs to be sent to a laboratory for a diarrhea panel. If nothing is found, the abdomen should be ultrasounded for the presence of anything abnormal, & biopsies obtained if anything suspicious is seen. Chronic vomiting & diarrhea needs to be addressed, but only after a proper diagnosis is made. At the very least, I would have Mac on a bland diet of 75% whole grain white rice ( not instant or minute rice ) & 25% white meat chicken. I would also start him on Proviable KP, a combination of a dog friendly Kaolin & pectin plus a high level of probiotics. This alone, will not cure his problem, but that much blood in the diarrhea is very concerning. Please try to find an internal medicine specialist, although I see you are in Hawaii, so I am not sure what might be available in your area.
