My dog has bloody diarrhea and vomiting. What should I expect?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female

I have been up all night with my dog. It started with a large mushy diarrhea, progressed to bloody stool and now is pretty much red jelly. She’s had about a dozen incidents and vomited once. I called the emergency vet and gave her some Cerenia and a pain med and am bringing her in as soon as the vet opens in a few hours. I have given her small amounts of water. What can I expect as far as treatment and prognosis?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Sasha. Blood work will likely be recommended to test for conditions such as pancreatitis and hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. Fecal testing will likely be performed as well. Bring a fresh sample if you are able. Treatment will be based on her exam findings and these results. Fluids are common as I suspect she is dehydrated from losing fluid in the stool and vomit. Cernia will probably be continued. She will likely need an antibiotic and possibly a dewormer as well. I hope this information helps!
