Why did my dog have bloody diarrhea then stop pooping for 24 hours?

Blood in the stool, even if it seems to "go away" and come back later, is never normal. The fact that it's accompanied by diarrhea suggests colitis, or inflammation of the colon, as opposed to some type of bleeding mass in the rectum or colon. Colitis can have a number of causes, including dietary indiscretion (eating something rotten or non-food), parasites, food allergies/food sensitivities, inflammatory bowel disease, or infection. Leah may improve with a diet change, perhaps a more digestible diet specifically for gastrointestinal problems. To assume it's a "tummy issue" could be to ignore causes that are treatable, and at this point she's not only having diarrhea but she also lost her appetite. It's been three days and she's not improving, so I recommend having her seen by her vet for labwork to include parasite testing, blood work, and urinalysis for starters. If all is normal consider a bland diet (as recommended above), and a probiotic supplement. Ultimately, she may need to have biopsies taken to diagnose the exact cause.

If her feaces were hard, it could be that the blood is from straining to pass the poo. Maybe feaces were harder because of vomiting and being slightly dehydrated. As you say, she probably senses the move and the stress, I would recommend to monitor her for the time being but see a vet if blood persisting or if worried.

That does seem awfully sudden. I would be concerned he could have gotten into something while playing. If he will drink he can have small frequent amounts of pedialyte (no grape flavor) for hydration. I wouldn't try to feed him for 12 hours to get his GI tract to relax. Hi! Dogs do sometimes get a little blood in their stool when they are having diarrhea. Sometimes this is just due to the straining (to produce the diarrhea!) But, we do usually recommend having a pet checked out when bleeding occurs, especially in Lucky's case, due to the history of eating a steak bone. Your vet could examine him, possibly take an Xray, and might be able to prescribe some medications to help ease the diarrhea! Best of luck!

If he is acting normal then you can withhold food for 12 hours and then offer him a small amount of a bland diet, like boiled chicken and white rice, and see how he does with that. You could also add a probiotic to his food. If the diarrhea continues, he starts vomiting, and/or becomes lethargic then he needs to be examined by a vet for treatment. He could have an infection, parasite, colitis, HGE, etc. and your vet can run lab-work to help diagnose and treat. Hope he feels better soon!

I would keep an eye on him, and even offer a bland meal of boiled rice and chicken to see if it helps if his symptoms have only been minor/happened once or twice. Reddish blood in the stool can indicate irritation of the lower GI tract, or even issues such as parasites. If Sparrow continues to have bloody stool, diarrhea, vomits more, is very lethargic or painful, or refuses to eat anything, it would be best to bring him into a vet for a complete workup.

Sometimes a dog will not "go" for 24 - 48 hours after anti-diarrheal medications have been started.
