Dog not pooping 2 days after bloody diarrhea & meds. Is it normal?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 6 years and 3 months old

My dog hasn't pooped in 2 days after having bloody diarrhea. Vet put him on antibiotics and he hasn't pooped since. I'm worried something is wrong.

Sometimes a dog will not "go" for 24 - 48 hours after anti-diarrheal medications have been started. Think of it like this: the system was essentially empty due to the diarrhea, and if the medication is effective, it will slow down the transit time of food through the GI tract and it will take a couple of days for him to actually need to poop again. As long as he is eating and drinking and feeling good, I would not immediately panic. I do often see dogs recovering from diarrhea go as much as 48 - 72 hours before having a bowel movement. If it's longer than this, or if he's not feeling well, get him rechecked immediately.

Some dogs may not have a bowel movement for a few days after a bout of diarrhea. The diarrhea empties things out and it can take a few days for normal stool to form and work its way through the intestines. If your dog is eating, drinking, and otherwise acting normally, it's best to give them a bit of time before worrying. If your dog still hasn't pooped in another day or two, he should be taken back to your vet for follow-up care.

Yes, this is normal. You can see a period of not pooping after having diarrhea. Bailey should poop again soon, but if it doesn't happen in another 24 hours, then I would be concerned. At that point, give his vet a call.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! That is somewhat expected while on an anti-diarrhea medication like metronidazole. I would give it another 24 hours or so as he will most likely go to the bathroom eventually in that time period. You can try giving him about 2-3 teaspoons of canned pumpkin with his meals which may help with his current constipation. Good luck and have a great day!

Yes, it is normal to see a period of not pooping after having diarrhea. Given that he is otherwise acting normally, I would not worry. He should poop soon. Keep an eye on him over the weekend and if he hasn't pooped by Monday, then I would worry and give his vet a call. I hope this helps!

Sometimes when they have diarrhea and haven't eaten as much it takes a few days to build up enough stool to have a proper bowel movement. If he is struggling or straining to poop then yes, I would be concerned. But if he is eating, drinking, not vomiting and acting normally, then I wouldn't be concerned. Not pooping for one day is not really a problem. They can go quite a few days without pooping and it is not necessarily a problem. The antibiotics can slow down the intestines which is probably why she is not pooping. Do not worry about it unless she seems to be trying to poop but nothing is coming out.

Dog had diarrhea, on Metronidazole. Is no poop after 24 hours normal?

This may not be unusual. Pets with diarrhea will often flush out the distal colon and it can take 2-3 days before the stool is present again in the colon. Make sure Figlio is eating well and acting normal. This is generally a good indication that he is recovering as expected. If he does not have a bowel movement after 3 days or if he seems to be feeling ill again, have him re-examined. Daily walks will help the bowels to move as well. Lastly, make sure he is drinking plenty of water. I hope this helps and that he continues to recover well.

My dog is constipated after diarrhea and meds. Should I stop them?

I'm sorry to hear that Sunny has been sick! It's actually quite common for dogs to go a few days without a bowel movement when they have had diarrhea - this is because it takes time for the intestinal tract to "fill up" again with normal stool, once the diarrhea resolves. So it's likely that this is a good sign :) As long as Sunny is acting normal and not straining to defecate, I wouldn't worry - she will have a bowel movement when she is ready, probably sometime in the next 24-48 hours. If you didn't give the medications two hours apart, this is okay - some vets do recommend giving oral meds like this at different times to avoid any issues with absorption, but it sounds like Sunny did just fine regardless. This would not cause constipation or any other issues. I would not recommend stopping either of these medications without talking to your veterinarian first, as it's generally important to finish out the entire course of prescribed meds in order to make sure that the problem is completely resolved. If you're concerned, you could certainly call your vet today and ask about continuing the medications vs. stopping them - but they should not be causing Sunny to be constipated, so based on your description I don't see any reason to take her off of them.

My dog had diarrhea, now no poop for 12 hours after Imodium. Normal?

Hello! This is normal. You can see a period of no pooping after having diarrhea, and I would not worry that he hasn't had any poop for 12 hours. Just be careful giving him Imodium, it's not safe if given more than two days and it's really safe for smaller dogs. I would keep feeding him the chicken and rice in small portions for the next 3 days, then slowly start adding back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea starts again or he has other symptoms such as vomiting, refusing to eat, blood in his poop, or lethargy, he will have to see a vet immediately. I hope this helps!

My dog had diarrhea, now no poop for 30 hours. Is this normal?

I am very sorry to hear that Lelani has been so unwell. It sounds as though she is on a great treatment Plan. It can be normal for some constipation to follow a gastrointestinal upset. I would continue to monitor her at home for a few hours. If by the end of the day she still hasn't had a bowel movement, or if she seems in pain or lethargic I Would take her back into the veterinarian. The concern is for a foegein body obstruction. But because she seems happy and active it is less likely.

Thanks for using Pet Coach! Sometimes after not eating and having severe diarrhea, it can take time for a solid stool to reach the "end of the pipes" so to speak. I would say that 4 days is on the long end of what I expect so if she does not defecate in the next 12 hours, I would recommend seeing your vet to make sure she is not constipated (which could happen with serious dehydration).
