My chihuahua's eye is bloodshot. What can I do before seeing a vet?

You can try benadryl twice a day (see link below) and flush it with eye irrigating solution but I am afraid that she will need some prescription eye drops from a vet. If she isn't improved or worsens within 12-24 hours, I would have your vet look at her. It looks as Benji is suffering from an eye infection, it is relatively common in dogs. you will need to take him to the vet the first chance you get, the vet will check the eyes, if it is indeed a simple eye infection your vet will prescribe an antibiotic eye drops that will probably solve the problem in no time.

This presentation is likely to be due to the so called ''cherry eye''. This defect causes the lacrimal gland to prolapse and protrude from the eye as a red fleshy mass. Its resolution is usually surgical but conservative treatment (based on specific eye drops) can be attempted. It's impossible to tell you what is going on with Daisy, but the most common cause of a dog squinting and rubbing their eye is a corneal ulceration. Corneal ulcers are often relatively easy to heal, but become worse the longer it is before they are treated, so I would recommend having Daisy evaluated by your vet ASAP. Hello there! While probably not an emergency (unless Dodi appears to have discharge or discomfort), I do recommend that she is seen by a vet. Broken blood vessels in the sclera (white part) of the eye are not entirely uncommon in pop-eyed dogs like the Havanese (usually from stress or irritation), however it usually happens in one eye at a time. Dodi is a young dog, and I would not expect any serious conditions, however it is always best to contact a vet when it comes to strange eye issues as if there is a problem, they can get worse quickly. The vet will want to check for conjunctivitis and foreign objects, though I would expect that Dodi would be acting uncomfortable if either of these were the case. It's most likely an eye infection, possibly conjunctivitis. Taking him to the vet now is great, before he damages the eye teslf by rubbing and scratching. Your vet will do an ophthalmic exam, part of which may be putting a dye in his eyes and examining them under a black light to look for scratches on his cornea. Based of the results of the exam, it will allow your vet to know just what is going on and how best to treat it.
