Why is my 8-week-old puppy's stomach bloated after roundworm medicine?

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Puppies tend to have a more bloated belly. Intestinal parasites are usually the main cause of this. Sometimes the intestines are more gassy in puppies too. I would give the dewormer some more time. If there is no improvement by a week i would have her examined and bring a stool sample with you. Sometimes changing puppy food can help as well. She is due for vaccinations so a Vet exam should be happening soon anyway. Good luck!

This may be a sign that your puppy still had a good amount of worms which now have been killed with the second dose of wormer. This can make a bit of indigestion or cause a bit of gas to form. I think your puppy will be fine. By tomorrow his abdomen should be less bloated again.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Dewormers will treat different types of worms depending on which dewormer is used. If you feel Percy's stomach is bloated, you can get a fecal sample checked for eggs and which type, to determine if he has worms and what type. If he is eating and pooping and playing normally, you are safe to just wait and deworm on the 16th, however if he is vomiting, having diarrhea, or seems weak and tired, then I would get him checked by a vet and try a different dewormer. I would recommend a vet check to determine if there are nay underlying medical causes but the fact she eats well is a good sign. Monitor for regular stools and no pain or vomiting and ensure she is dewormed regularly with an appropriate puppy wormer (every 2-4 weeks depending on the product). Keep her isolated from other dogs (especially dog parks etc) until she is fully up to date with her vaccines

Poor girl. Penelope likely had a large worm load that is going to take some time to go away. Her large bloated belly is likely the remaining worms in her system. Continue to give her the dewormer as instructed and you can also add some fiber to her diet by giving her 1-2 tsp of canned Pumpkin (not the filing) in her food daily for 7-10 days or as needed. This will help harden her stools and also help regulate her bowels. The gas she has also is directly related to the worms, so once the worm load decreases this will improve as well. She also likely will appear gassier as the worms work their way out her system. As long as she is eating well and not vomiting still she will likely be fine. If she is fully vaccinated, I would recommend taking her on 20-30 minute brisk walks and gentle tummy rubs to help her naturally decrease the gas in her stomach. If this doesn't work, then call your vet to discuss possible anti-gas medication that he can prescribe for her. I hope she feels better soon!

8 week old puppies, even large breed ones, have pretty tiny stomachs, and they also have poor abdominal musculature development at this stage. Those 2 factors can cause you to really be able to see their abdomen bulging when the stomach is full or water or food. So that might be one reason you're seeing this. The other reason could be that Mishka has intestinal parasites. They are very common in young puppies, so if she hasn't been dewormed, this should be done, at least twice (3 - 4 weeks apart). It's also a good idea to have your vet check a stool sample. You can buy dewormer over the counter in most pet stores; follow the directions on the package.

Your pup sure is adorable! His belly is most likely bloated because of the intestinal parasites and should go down over the next week. I would make sure he is also being dewormed for more routine intestinal parasites (like roundworms and hookworms) to make sure he is covered.
