My dog went blind and then died. What caused his sudden death?

That’s very sad. Sudden blindness can be from high blood pressure causing retinal detachment or diabetic cataracts. She may have had a heart or lung condition that prevented her from getting enough air and chest expansion to bark. Dogs do die from congestive heart failure, complications from heartworm disease and other heart problems. Unfortunately neither of the symptoms you describe are specific enough to know why she died. There is no way to know for sure but diabetes, an infected uterus, kidney disease or a possible brain lesion are all options. Diabetes can cause cataracts which leads to sudden blindness along with drinking excessively and vomiting when they ketoscidosis from it. It usually requires days to weeks of hospitalization when that advanced. Kidney disease also causes drinking a lot with vomiting but unrelated to blindness. Since she is not fixed, her uterus can get an infection called a pyometra which allows it to fill with pus. It requires emergency surgery to fix. This too can cause drinking a lot and vomiting. Unfortunately, the only way to know why she died would be to have an autopsy performed (called a necropsy in animals), either by your veterinarian or a veterinary pathologist if you have one nearby. Since it sounds like it happened quite suddenly and she was bleeding from her eyes, she may have had a bleeding disorder (this can be caused by ingesting rat poison, or by some hereditary or immune-mediated diseases), or she could have suffered a head trauma of some kind. But I'm afraid there's no way to know for sure without a necrospy. Again, I'm so sorry for your loss.

In order to tell for sure, I would have to get more information about his case, examine the body and send samples for testing. However, considering how soon he died, this indicates that he either had severe organ damage, or a severely altered blood chemistry. This can happen in cases of certain infections and in cases of poisoning. There are also many other preexisting conditions like cancer, heart/vascular disease and parasitism that could also cause their to be a sudden decline in health. I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your pet. I am not sure how old she was, but losing a pet no matter how old or young is still hard to cope with. Over time it does get a little easier to cope with this lose and you should always cherish the good moments you had with your pet. As a side, you do have the option of getting any pet a necropsy (examination of the body rigth after they pass) to hopefully determine the cause of death. It is impossible to know for sure what caused her demise based on the symptoms you described but it is possible she may have had a stroke, an underlying heart condition or cancer. She could have had heart problems, cancer, liver failure, or possibly something toxic you didn't realize Bella got into during the day. Without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain what caused her to pass away, but I do recommend taking her into a vet for a necropsy.
