My dog is bleeding from his penis and has bloody poop. Is it serious?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 16.5 lbs

Blood just came out of my dogs penis while he was walking around the house and earlier his poop was quite bloody. His diet has consisted of dog food and he has received frequent lamb bones to which he chews. He has also been panting a lot recently. He is a 3 year old Male Shih tzu beach on cross who is not muted. If you could tell me what is wrong that would greatly be appreciated. Thanks

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Treakle. I would recommend that he sees his veterinarian. Blood in the stool can be the result of straining to defecate or inflammation in the colon. A lot of times, it is accompanied by diarrhea. He will likely need an antibiotic to resolve the blood in the stool. The blood coming from his penis is less common. Has there been any blood in his urine? Is he straining to urinate? This can be a sign of a urinary tract infection or bladder stones. Other causes of blood from the urinary system are prostate disease or a mass or irritation on the penis itself. Is there any chance he was exposed to rat poison such as D-con? This will cause a bleeding disorder in the dog. He will need to see his veterinarian to see if these scenarios apply to him and the best course of treatment. I hope this information helps!

    Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Presence of blood in urine is usually related to urinary tract infection, prostate problems or bladder stones. If Marshall is not able to pass any urine, you should take him to your local vets as an emergency.
    Blood in stools is probably not related to presence of blood in urine. It could be a sign of infectious gastroenteritis, intestinal worms, food indiscretion, allergy and more. This problem should be also investigated and treated as soon as possible.

    Thank you for submitting your question regarding Solder. I do recommend that he sees a veterinarian. Blood in the urine of a male dog is always worrisome. Given the male anatomy, urinary tract infections are rare. Rat poisoning ingestion can cause a bleeding disorder. He could also have another bleeding disorder, bladder stones or a bladder tumor. All of these conditions require treatment and will not resolve on their own. I hope this information helps!

I see that your dog is not neutered - I'm not sure how old he is, but in middle-aged or older unneutered males it is common to see blood dripping from the penis as a symptom of an [enlarged prostate](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/prostate-enlargement/). That is normally the first thing that I would check out in a dog with this problem. Other possible causes include an injury or tumor on the penis or the penile sheath, a bladder or prostate infection, bladder stones, kidney disease, or even a systemic bleeding disorder. I would recommend taking him to a vet for an exam - they will probably want to collect a urine sample for testing, check his prostate during a rectal exam, and examine his penis closely outside the sheath to look for any problems. From there, x-rays and ultrasound can be used to look at the prostate, if needed. If the problem is due to prostatic enlargement, this can normally be improved with [neutering](https://www.petcoach.co/article/benefits-of-neutering-castrating-male-dogs-puppies/) and does not typically cause any long-term problems.

Bleeding from the penis indicates a serious problem. In an unneutered dog, it could be a prostate infection, enlargement, or tumor. Some other possibilities include a urinary tract infection, bladder stones, or a systemic bleeding problem (coagulopathy). I suspect that his paw biting is unrelated and may be due to allergies or a hot spot, but he should definitely be seen by a veterinarian to determine the cause of both issues and come up with a good treatment plan. Well, it is certainly suspicious that the blood may be coming from the penis. Is there any sign of trauma? If not it may be more internal. Bladder infection, prostate infection, and commonly bladder stones are all possible causes. Bladder stones in males are especially concerning because they can lodge in the penis and cause a urinary obstruction. Less likely would be a bleeding disorder, but that can happen as well. I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon. They will likely recommend an x-ray to look for stones and a urinalysis. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

I am so sorry to hear about Prince. It sounds like he needs to see a veterinarian as soon as possible. Possible causes for the bleeding from the penis include bladder stones, infection or inflammation of the bladder or prostate, tumor of the prostate or bladder, wound on the penis or problem with the urethra, and bleeding disorders. Your dog needs a good physical exam to start off- the vet can palpate the prostate and bladder and check the penis for problems. They then may recommend a urine test and an x-ray or ultrasound to check the bladder and prostate. They can then get more information on these episodes you are describing, as well as listen to his heart and lungs to be sure these spells he is having aren't fainting/weakness related to a heart issue. They can also x-ray his stomach and do bloodwork to check for underlying causes for his vomiting. It sounds like he is quite ill so I would get him in to the vet right away. I recommend having Nemo examined by a veterinarian and having a urine sample checked to see if an infection is present. He may need X-rays to rule out a bladder stone. It's very serious that Toby is leaking blood from his rectum, and he could have a foreign body, suffering trauma to the GI tract, may have eaten something toxic, or has abscessed or ruptured anal sacs among other causes. This would also cause blood in his stool. He needs to see a vet now to diagnose the cause of his symptoms so he can be treated. Please take him into a vet right away.
